Biography

Short Description

Saint Hyacinth, known in Polish as Jacek Odrowąż, was a thirteenth-century Dominican friar remembered as a principal founder of the Order of Preachers in Poland and as a missionary on the eastern and northern frontiers of Latin Christendom. He was born into the noble Odrowąż family, according to the received tradition in 1185, at or near Kamień in Silesia. After studies in Kraków and at other schools of the region he was ordained and became a canon of the cathedral chapter of Kraków. In the company of his kinsman Bishop Ivo Odrowąż he travelled to Rome. There, in the years around 1218–1221, Dominican tradition records that he and his cousin Ceslaus (Czesław) received the habit of the newly established Order of Preachers from Saint Dominic himself at Santa Sabina.

Sent back across the Alps to plant the order in Polish lands, Hyacinth established in 1222 the priory of the Holy Trinity in Kraków, which became the mother house of the Polish Dominicans and the centre of his later cult. From Kraków he and his brethren founded further convents in Silesia, Greater Poland, and Pomerania. Contemporary documentation for his itinerary is thin, but later hagiography credits him with preaching among the still-pagan Prussians and with journeys into the lands of Rus’. These accounts, even where they cannot be verified in detail, reflect the early Dominican vocation to preach on the edges of the Latin world and explain why he came to be called an apostle of Poland and of the North.

The episode most firmly attached to his name is set at Kiev during the Mongol assault of 1240. Tradition relates that Hyacinth, remaining in the church as the city fell, took up the ciborium with the Blessed Sacrament and a heavy statue of the Mother of God and carried both to safety across the Dnieper, the image becoming light in his arms or the waters bearing him up. Whether a strictly historical event or a later crystallization of his Eucharistic and Marian reputation, the story accounts for his customary iconography—a Dominican holding a monstrance and a statue of the Virgin—and for his invocation by those in danger of drowning. Other miracles of healing, of grain multiplied in famine, and of crossing rivers dry-shod were recorded in the process of his cult.

Hyacinth spent his last years at the Kraków priory. He died there on 15 August 1257, the feast of the Assumption, and was buried in the church of the Holy Trinity. A vigorous cult grew at his tomb. After examination of his life and miracles, Pope Clement VIII canonized him on 17 April 1594. His feast is kept on 17 August in the General Roman Calendar. He is honoured as a patron of Poland and of Lithuania. In art and popular devotion he remains the mendicant missionary who carried both the Eucharist and the Mother of God through danger, a representative figure of the thirteenth-century expansion of the Dominican order into East-Central Europe.
