Biography

Short Description

James of Picenum, known in Italian as Giacomo della Marca and in Latin as Jacobus de Marchia, was a Franciscan Observant friar, preacher, and missionary of the fifteenth century. He was born at Monteprandone in the March of Ancona, the district corresponding to ancient Picenum in central Italy. Reliable sources disagree on the precise year of his birth, which is variously given in the early 1390s; his family surname is recorded as Gangala, and he was baptized Domenico. After studies in civil law, including a reported doctorate at Perugia, he entered the Observant branch of the Order of Friars Minor in the second decade of the fifteenth century and took the religious name James. He was formed in the strict reform associated with Bernardine of Siena and John of Capistrano.

As a priest he became one of the leading itinerant preachers of the Observance. He traveled throughout the Italian peninsula and was sent on missions into Hungary, Bosnia, Austria, Bohemia, and Poland. Accounts of his career present him as an opponent of groups judged heretical, including the Fraticelli in Italy and Hussite currents in Central Europe, and as an agent of papal policy in those regions. He promoted devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus in the tradition of Bernardine of Siena. Successive popes employed him as a legate and as an inquisitor. He also took part in the broader fifteenth-century efforts toward reunion with Eastern Christians connected with the Council of Florence, and he worked at times to compose peace among Italian cities and factions.

James was known for personal austerity, for founding and reforming Franciscan houses, and for a reputation as a wonder-worker that grew during his lifetime and after his death. He composed sermons and treatises, among them works directed against the Fraticelli and contributions to contemporary theological controversies, including the dispute over the Precious Blood of Christ. He declined high ecclesiastical office. In later years he was active in the Kingdom of Naples. He died at Naples on 28 November 1476 and was buried in the Franciscan church of Santa Maria la Nova. Relics associated with him were later venerated at Monteprandone, his birthplace, where a sanctuary developed around his cult.

The Observants and the people of the March of Ancona promoted his memory soon after his death. He was beatified by Pope Urban VIII in 1624 and canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 28 November as a confessor of the Order of Friars Minor, noting the austerity of his life, his apostolic preaching, and his miracles. He is the patron saint of Monteprandone. Historical sources agree on the main lines of his career as a reformer and preacher even where they differ on the exact year of his birth.
