Biography

Short Description

John of Capistrano, known in Italian as Giovanni da Capestrano, was born in 1386 in Capestrano in the Abruzzo, then within the Kingdom of Naples. His father is described in the sources as a man of northern origin who had settled in southern Italy, variously identified as a German knight or as connected with the Angevin following. John studied law at the University of Perugia and became a successful jurist. King Ladislaus of Naples appointed him governor of Perugia in the early 1410s. In this secular period of his life he married; traditional accounts hold that the marriage was never consummated. In 1416, during war between Perugia and the Malatesta, he was sent as an ambassador, imprisoned, and during captivity underwent a religious conversion, which later lives associated with a vision of Francis of Assisi.

After his release he obtained a dispensation from the marriage and entered the Order of Friars Minor, receiving the habit in October 1416, according to tradition from Bernardine of Siena. He joined the Observant reform, endured a strict novitiate, and was ordained a priest. He became one of the most widely heard popular preachers of the fifteenth century in Italy. He collaborated with Bernardine in defending the Observant movement and the cult of the Holy Name of Jesus, and he worked to establish and discipline Observant convents. The papacy employed him as a diplomat and as an inquisitor, notably against the Fraticelli. He composed numerous treatises on the Franciscan rule, moral theology, and canon law, drawing on his earlier legal training.

From mid-century he preached north of the Alps, in the German lands, Austria, Bohemia, Poland, and Hungary. His missions combined Observant reform and preaching against the Hussites with campaigns that included harsh measures against Jewish communities in several towns, an aspect of his career that modern historians treat critically. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Pope Callixtus III commissioned him to preach a crusade against the Ottoman advance. In 1456 he took part, at an advanced age, in the defense of Belgrade alongside the Hungarian commander John Hunyadi. Contemporary reports credit his preaching with helping to rally crusaders and irregulars who contributed to the Christian victory in July 1456, which halted the Ottoman push in that region for a generation.

Exhausted by the campaign, he died on 23 October 1456 at Ilok (Újlak) on the Danube, then in the Kingdom of Hungary and now in Croatia. He was buried in the Franciscan church of that town. His cult developed among the Observant Franciscans and in Central Europe. Pope Alexander VIII canonized him in 1690. The Roman Catholic Church keeps his feast on 23 October. He is invoked as patron of jurists and of military chaplains and is associated with Belgrade through the 1456 siege. Spanish Franciscans later placed missions under his name, including San Juan Capistrano in California. He remains a representative figure of the late medieval Observant preacher: a trained lawyer turned friar, an austere reformer, a papal agent, and a participant in the crusading and confessional conflicts of the fifteenth century.
