Biography

Short Description

John of Kenty (Jan Kanty; Latin Ioannes Cantius) was born in 1390 in Kęty, a small town in Lesser Poland not far from Oświęcim, in the Kingdom of Poland. Tradition names his parents Stanisław and Anna. From a provincial background he made his way to Kraków, where he studied at the university refounded in 1400 by King Władysław II Jagiełło and Queen Jadwiga. The Kraków academy in the early fifteenth century was the chief seat of higher learning in the Polish lands and drew students from across Central Europe. John completed degrees in the arts and in theology and was ordained a priest. He remained attached to the university for the rest of his life, first as a student and then as a master, lecturing in philosophy and subsequently in theology.

For a short time he left academic work to serve as parish priest in Olkusz, a mining town west of Kraków, but he returned to the capital and to teaching. He was a secular (diocesan) priest, not a member of a religious order. He was known among colleagues and students for the seriousness of his preparation, for the manuscripts he copied by hand, and for an austere personal rule. He ate and slept little, dressed simply, and distributed to the poor whatever money or goods came into his hands. Later hagiography records that he made pilgrimages on foot to Rome more than once and that he also went to Jerusalem. Anecdotes that became part of his cult include the tale of highway robbers who, after taking his purse, were so moved when he offered them the coins they had missed that they restored what they had stolen, and stories of food given to beggars being miraculously replaced. Such legends, whether or not they can be verified in detail, reflect the reputation he acquired in Kraków as a priest of unusual charity and humility.

He died in Kraków on 24 December 1473, the vigil of Christmas, and was buried in the collegiate church of Saint Anne, the church of the university community. Devotion to him grew in the following generations. His tomb was visited as that of a holy man, and reports of favors obtained through his intercession accumulated. In the seventeenth century Rome examined his cause: Pope Clement X beatified him in 1676. On 16 July 1767 Pope Clement XIII canonized him. His feast was placed in the General Roman Calendar, at first on 20 October; after the calendar revision of 1969 it has been observed on 23 December. He is styled a confessor, the traditional designation for a saint who was not a martyr.

Saint John of Kenty is honored as a patron of Poland and of Lithuania, of Kraków and of Kęty, and of students, teachers, and university professors. He is particularly associated with the Jagiellonian University and with the church of Saint Anne in Kraków, where his relics continue to be venerated. In the religious culture of Poland he stands as an example of the learned cleric of the late Middle Ages whose scholarship, priestly life, and care for the poor were held up together as a single pattern of holiness.
