Biography
Saint John of Sahagún, known in older English and Latin sources as Confessor John of San Fagondez, was born in 1419 at Sahagún (San Fagondez) in the Kingdom of León in Spain. He was the eldest son of noble and pious parents, Juan González de Castrillo and Sancha Martínez. He received his first education in the Benedictine monastery of his native town. While still a youth he was introduced into the household of the Bishop of Burgos and was later ordained priest by that prelate. Out of humility he declined several ecclesiastical dignities offered to him and accepted only a humble chaplaincy at the church of Saint Agatha. He devoted himself to the spiritual care of his flock and distinguished himself by his charity to the poor.
Having resolved to embrace a more perfect state, John went to Salamanca, where he studied at the university, and thereafter sought admission to the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine. After his profession he was made master of novices and afterwards prior of the convent of Salamanca. He was distinguished for his devotion to the Holy Eucharist, and his sermons on this subject were so effective that they converted a large number of sinners. He was also a zealous defender of the rights of the Church and fearlessly denounced the vices of the great. He was gifted with the power of reading hearts, and many miracles are attributed to him.
Salamanca in the fifteenth century was troubled by bitter and violent feuds among its noble families. John labored as a peacemaker among these factions and is remembered for reconciling enemies and restoring a measure of civic peace. His frank preaching against public immorality earned him both veneration among the people and hostility from some of the powerful. He lived an austere life as an Augustinian friar and was widely sought as a confessor.
He died at Salamanca on 11 June 1479. Some accounts state that he died of pestilence; others report that he was poisoned by a woman whose paramour he had converted. He was beatified by Pope Clement VIII in 1601 and canonized by Pope Alexander VIII in 1690. His feast is observed on 12 June. He is the patron saint of the city of Salamanca.
