Biography

Short Description

Josse, also known as Judoc, Jodocus, or Iudocus (Breton Jozeg), was a seventh-century Breton noble who became a priest and hermit and was afterwards honoured as a confessor. According to the medieval vita that preserves his legend, he was a son of Judicael, king of Domnonée in Armorican Brittany. Judicael is known independently from seventh-century Frankish narrative as a Breton ruler who dealt with King Dagobert I. When Judicael withdrew from kingship to take up the monastic life, the nobles of Domnonée sought to make Josse king in his place. Josse refused the crown and turned instead to a religious vocation.

He was ordained priest and, in the traditional account, made a pilgrimage to Rome. Returning north, he entered the household of Haymon, count of Ponthieu, who gave him an estate at Runiacum on the Channel coast of northern Gaul, near the river Canche. That place later took the name Saint-Josse-sur-Mer. There Josse built an oratory and lived as a hermit, combining an austere personal rule with priestly ministry. Disciples are said to have joined him, and the hermitage became a small centre of religious life in Ponthieu.

Hagiographical tradition records that he died on 13 December in the later seventh century, a date often given as about 668, and that he was buried at his oratory. The tomb became a pilgrimage site. In later centuries a monastery grew up at Saint-Josse-sur-Mer. Relics attributed to him were translated on several occasions; in the tenth century relics were taken to the New Minster at Winchester, which helped to establish his cult in England. Further dedications spread through Flanders and the German lands, where he is often called Jodokus or Joost.

The narrative of his life depends on later medieval lives rather than on contemporary documents, and some legendary features cannot be verified. His cult as priest and confessor is nonetheless well attested in early medieval martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 13 December. He has been invoked as a patron of pilgrims, and the village of Saint-Josse-sur-Mer in what is now the Pas-de-Calais remains the principal place associated with his death and burial. Place-names and church dedications derived from his name survive in France, Belgium, and Germany.
