Biography

Short Description

Saint Julius, known in the liturgical tradition as a priest and confessor, is identified with the figure venerated at Novara and on Isola San Giulio in Lake Orta. He belongs to the generation of missionaries who worked in northern Italy during the later fourth and early fifth centuries, a period when Christianity was being established in rural and lakeside districts that had retained pagan practices. Almost all narrative detail concerning him derives from a medieval vita whose composition is usually dated to the eleventh century or afterward. Historians treat this text as a work of pious legend rather than as a contemporary biography, yet it preserves the memory of a local cult that is archaeologically and liturgically ancient.

The vita describes Julius and his brother Julian as originating from the Greek island of Aegina. Julius was ordained priest and Julian deacon. They are said to have come to Italy, in some versions during the reign of Theodosius I, with the purpose of converting pagan populations and of substituting churches for temples and idols. Julius is credited in the legend with the foundation of a great number of churches, a round figure of one hundred often being given. Their labors are placed in the region of the Lombard lakes, especially around Lake Orta and in the territory that later formed the Diocese of Novara.

A central miracle story recounts that Isola San Giulio was infested with serpents and given over to pagan cult. When a fisherman refused to ferry him, Julius crossed the lake standing on his cloak, expelled the serpents, and built a church in honor of Saints Peter and Paul. He remained on the island until his death and was buried in the church he had founded. His brother Julian settled at Gozzano on the mainland, where he likewise built a church and was interred. Later tradition assigns Julius's death to the year 401, but that date is not confirmed by any independent contemporary source.

The present Basilica of San Giulio, a Romanesque church noted for its black marble pulpit of the early twelfth century, stands on the site of earlier Christian structures and contains the saint's relics. The Roman Martyrology records him on 31 January as a priest and confessor at Novara. He is the patron saint of Isola San Giulio and of Orta San Giulio. While the precise chronology and the Greek origin remain unverified by independent historical sources, the continuity of his cult from late antiquity onward indicates that a priest named Julius played a significant role in the Christianization of this part of Piedmont.
