Biography

Short Description

Saint Justus of Lyon, commemorated in the martyrologies as Justus, bishop and confessor, was a fourth-century prelate of the church of Lyons in Roman Gaul. No reliable source records the year or precise place of his birth. He first appears as a cleric connected with the church of Vienne and was later raised to the see of Lyons, already one of the chief bishoprics of Gaul and heir to the tradition of Pothinus and Irenaeus. He is attested at the Council of Aquileia in 381, which deposed Arian bishops from Illyricum; his name stands among those who subscribed the synodal letter to the emperors. Beyond these notices, the details of his early career, family, and the exact year of his consecration remain unknown.

The episode that shaped his later memory took place in Lyons itself. A man who had committed several murders fled into the cathedral and claimed the right of sanctuary. A crowd surrounded the church and demanded that the fugitive be handed over. Justus, together with a priest named Viator, extracted from the people a promise that the prisoner’s life would be spared and then surrendered him. The mob killed the man nonetheless. Convinced that he had betrayed the immunity of the altar and was no longer fit to offer the Eucharist, Justus left the city in secret. Accompanied by Viator he travelled first in the direction of Rome and then onward to Egypt, where he entered the monastic settlements of the desert of Scetis in the Nitrian region and lived as an unrecognized monk among the Desert Fathers.

The church of Lyons refused to accept the loss of its bishop and sent a deacon to search for him. The deacon eventually identified Justus in the desert, but the bishop would not resume his see. He remained in Egypt until his death, which later tradition places about the year 390. After he died, his body was recovered and carried back to Lyons, where it was enshrined in the church of the Maccabees. That church thereafter bore his name and became the basilica of Saint-Just; a district of Lyons is still called Saint-Just. Viator, who had shared his master’s flight and monastic life, was likewise venerated.

Justus was honoured as a saint from an early date, without a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type. His principal feast is kept on 2 September; Lyons also remembered the translation of his relics. He is recalled as a bishop who, after a crisis of conscience over the violation of sanctuary, chose the anonymity of the Egyptian desert rather than the dignity of his office, and as one of the Gallic prelates who linked the Rhône valley with the monastic world of Scetis. Precise dates of birth, the full chronology of his episcopate, and any record of family or patronage beyond his local cult are not preserved in sources that can be verified.
