Biography

Short Description

Macarius the Confessor, known in Greek sources as Makarios of Pelekete, was a Byzantine monk and abbot of the eighth and ninth centuries whose life is known principally from a hagiographical vita composed by his disciple Sabas. He was born in Constantinople to a Christian family of some means. After the death of his parents he gave his property to the poor and left the capital for Bithynia, where he entered the monastery of Pelekete, dedicated to Saint John the Theologian and situated near the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara. There he was tonsured and trained in the common life of prayer, fasting, and work. He was later ordained priest and, on account of his reputation for holiness and sound judgment, was elected abbot of the community.

The monastery of Pelekete already stood in the tradition of resistance to imperial iconoclasm. In the eighth century its abbot John had suffered under Constantine V. Macarius inherited that stance. When Leo V the Armenian restored iconoclast policy in 815 and required monks and clergy to reject the decisions of the Second Council of Nicaea, Macarius refused to abandon the veneration of icons or to communicate with bishops who had accepted the new imperial line. Officers of the emperor arrested him and conveyed him to Constantinople. He was examined, subjected to beating and imprisonment, and held as a confessor of the iconodule faith while Leo remained on the throne.

Leo V was murdered in 820. His successor, Michael II the Amorian, emptied many of the prisons and allowed some of the iconodule monks to return to their monasteries, yet he did not restore the public cult of the images and forbade discussion of the issue. Macarius would not accept a silence that left iconoclast prelates in possession of the churches. Because he continued to teach the theology of the icons and to refuse communion with the official hierarchy, he was banished to the island of Aphousia in the Propontis. On Aphousia he lived as an exile among other banished monks, maintaining the monastic rule and offering spiritual counsel until his death. Church tradition places his death in exile in the early ninth century, often given as the year 830, though the precise date is not independently confirmed by non-hagiographical documents.

Sabas, who had known him, wrote the Life that became the basis of later synaxarion notices. In that narrative Macarius is presented not only as a stubborn opponent of heresy but as an ascetic and healer whose prayers were sought by the sick and the possessed. Modern historians treat the miracle stories with the caution due to all medieval vitae, but they accept the outline of his career as abbot of Pelekete, prisoner under Leo V, and exile under Michael II, because it coheres with the better-documented history of the second iconoclast period and with the parallel careers of Theodore the Studite, Theophanes the Confessor, and other monastic leaders.

The Eastern Orthodox Church numbers Macarius among the venerable confessors and keeps his feast on 1 April. He is not widely invoked as a patron of particular places or trades, and no medieval Western canonization process attached to his name; his cult remained within the Byzantine and later Slavic liturgical calendars. His historical importance lies in the witness of Bithynian monasticism during the last phase of the iconoclast controversy, a generation that prepared the restoration of the icons in 843.
