Biography

Short Description

Mansuetus, venerated as a saint and confessor, was Archbishop of Milan in the second half of the seventh century. Contemporary and near-contemporary sources do not record his parentage, the place of his birth, or the year in which he was born, and no reliable early-life narrative has been preserved. He enters the historical record as bishop of a see that was among the most important in northern Italy, at a time when the region formed part of the Lombard kingdom and when relations between the Lombard court, the papacy, and the Byzantine Empire were politically and theologically complex. Standard reconstructions of the Milanese episcopal list place the beginning of his pontificate around 676, following Archbishop Ampelius, and its end with his death about a decade later.

The principal documented episode of his career is his resistance to Monothelitism. That doctrine, which held that Christ had only one will, had been promoted in the Eastern Empire earlier in the century and had caused lasting division. In approximately 679 or 680 Mansuetus called a synod of the church of Milan. The synod rejected Monothelitism and confessed the existence of two wills and two operations in the one person of Christ, in agreement with the teaching associated with Pope Agatho of Rome. A letter from the Milanese synod to the emperor Constantine IV, linked in the manuscript tradition with Mansuetus, set forth this Christological position and affirmed the Milanese church’s communion with Rome. The text is one of the few surviving witnesses to the doctrinal stance of the Ambrosian church in those years.

This local synod formed part of the wider Western preparation for the Sixth Ecumenical Council, the Third Council of Constantinople (680–681), which would formally define dyothelitism and condemn Monothelite leaders. Whether Mansuetus travelled to Rome for Pope Agatho’s synod of 680 or sent representatives is not established with certainty in the extant acts. After the council, the theological position he had supported became the received doctrine of both the Latin and Greek churches. Apart from this controversy, almost nothing is known of his pastoral government, his relations with the Lombard kings, or any writings beyond the synodal letter associated with his name.

Mansuetus is generally held to have died in Milan in 685. He is commemorated on 19 February in the Roman Martyrology, which styles him bishop and confessor, and on the same date in the Ambrosian Rite proper to Milan. No early vita has survived, and later notices are brief. Like other holy bishops of the patristic and early medieval period, he was honoured by liturgical cult rather than by a formal process of canonization of the kind that developed in the later Middle Ages. Specific patronages attached to his name are not recorded in the principal hagiographical reference works, and the location of his burial, though presumably in Milan, is not described in detail by sources that can be independently verified.
