Biography

Short Description

Saint Maurus, often styled Maurus the Confessor in later liturgical usage, is known from early medieval tradition as the first and most trusted disciple of Saint Benedict of Nursia. The only near-contemporary account is that of Pope Gregory the Great in Book II of the Dialogues, written in the 590s on the basis of testimony from Benedict’s own disciples. Gregory identifies Maurus as the son of Equitius, a nobleman of Rome, who was offered to Benedict as a child oblate while the community was still at Subiaco in central Italy in the first half of the sixth century. In Gregory’s portrait Maurus is already a youth of marked holiness, serving as Benedict’s helper in the governance of the monks and as an exemplar of obedience.

Gregory’s most famous anecdote concerning Maurus is the rescue of the child monk Placidus from drowning. According to the Dialogues, Placidus went to draw water from the lake at Subiaco, lost his footing, and was carried out from shore. Benedict, still in his oratory, saw the accident in spirit and ordered Maurus to run to the boy’s aid. Maurus, having received the abbot’s blessing, ran across the water as though it were solid ground, caught Placidus by the hair, and pulled him to land; only when they were safe did he perceive that he had been walking on the lake. Gregory presents the event as a miracle granted to obedience rather than as a display of Maurus’s independent power. Maurus subsequently followed Benedict from Subiaco to Monte Cassino. The Dialogues supply no further narrative of his life and are silent on the time and place of his death.

From the ninth century onward a much more elaborate biography circulated in Francia, especially at the monastery of Glanfeuil on the Loire, later known as Saint-Maur-sur-Loire. The Life of Maurus associated with Abbot Odo of Glanfeuil claims that Benedict, toward the middle of the sixth century, sent Maurus into Gaul to establish Benedictine monasticism there; that Maurus founded Glanfeuil, ruled it as abbot, worked further miracles, and died on 15 January, which became his feast day. Relics venerated as his were kept at Glanfeuil and, after the disruptions of the Viking age, were translated in the ninth century to Saint-Maur-des-Fossés near Paris, from which the medieval cult radiated. Critical historians since the modern period have generally judged the Gallic mission and the identification of Glanfeuil’s founder with Benedict’s Roman disciple to be a ninth-century literary construction, designed to authenticate relics and to claim a direct link with Monte Cassino. Consequently the historically secure Maurus remains a sixth-century Italian monk of Benedict’s circle, while his later career, death, and burial cannot be established from reliable sources.

The liturgical cult, however, is well attested. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 15 January as abbot and disciple of Saint Benedict, and Benedictine houses have long kept his memory with particular honor. In popular devotion he has been invoked as patron of charcoal burners, cobblers, and coppersmiths, and against cold, gout, hoarseness, and rheumatism. Medieval and later art typically represents him as a young Benedictine monk or abbot, sometimes bearing a crozier, sometimes depicted in the act of walking upon the water to save Placidus. Whatever the uncertainties of the later legend, the figure of Maurus has served for centuries as a symbol of monastic obedience and of the early transmission of Benedict’s way of life.
