Biography

Short Description

The designation Confessor Nemesius does not correspond to a single, securely documented individual whose life can be reconstructed from contemporary or near-contemporary historical sources. In early Christian usage the title confessor was applied to those who publicly acknowledged the faith under persecution, whether or not they died as martyrs, and later became a conventional rank for non-martyr saints. Several men named Nemesius appear in martyrologies, synaxaria, and ecclesiastical literature of the third and fourth centuries, yet none is consistently and exclusively styled Confessor Nemesius in the principal Western or Eastern collections. Because the epithet is not attached in a stable way, a birth year, native city, death place, burial site, family circumstances, and cultic details cannot be verified and must be left unspecified.

One frequently cited Nemesius is the Alexandrian remembered in later martyrologies on 19 December. The tradition, which ultimately depends on notices of the Decian persecution in the mid-third century, states that he was first denounced as a thief, acquitted of that charge, then accused of being a Christian, tortured a second time, and burned alive together with common criminals. No independent contemporary document supplies his age, parentage, occupation beyond the implication that he was a layman of Alexandria, or the location of any tomb. He is commemorated as a martyr rather than as a confessor in the strict technical sense.

A second Nemesius, described as a deacon of Rome, is associated in the Roman Martyrology and related recensions with his daughter Lucilla and a group of companions said to have suffered in the third century; feast dates of 25 August or 31 October appear in different witnesses. The notices give no birth year, no city of origin other than Rome, and no information about a spouse beyond the existence of a daughter. A third figure, Nemesius of Emesa, was bishop of that Syrian city in the late fourth century and author of the anthropological treatise On the Nature of Man. He is known from literary rather than hagiographical evidence, is not regularly titled confessor, and has no well-attested liturgical cult.

No religious order, marriage, children, papal or patriarchal office, patronage, or formal act of canonization or beatification can be confirmed for any of these men under the specific style Confessor Nemesius. The personal name is Greek and masculine. Local calendars or unpublished manuscript synaxaria may preserve a distinct memory, but such a memory has not been identified in the standard historical and hagiographical literature. Further precision would require a specific liturgical or documentary source that is not presently available.
