Biography

Short Description

Saint Ouen, also known as Audoen, Audoin, or Dado (Latin: Audoenus), was a seventh-century Frankish bishop of Rouen and one of the principal churchmen of Neustria. He was born of a noble family in the pagus of Soissons, traditionally at Sancy, in the early seventh century; later writers often give a date around 609, but no contemporary record fixes the year. His father is named Autharius and his mother Aiga; his brothers Ado and Rado likewise left court life for the cloister and became monastic founders. Raised at the Merovingian court, Ouen received a literary education and entered the service of King Dagobert I as referendary, or chancellor. There he formed a lasting friendship with Saint Eligius (Eloi), the goldsmith and future bishop of Noyon, and shared with him a strong interest in the Columbanian monastic revival then spreading through Gaul.

While still a lay official he used his wealth and standing to establish the monastery of Rebais in the diocese of Meaux, placing it under a rule associated with Saint Columbanus and appointing Saint Agilus as first abbot. After Dagobert’s death he withdrew from secular office, received holy orders, and in 641 was consecrated bishop of Rouen. He held that see for more than four decades. As bishop he promoted monastic foundations in his diocese and beyond, supported houses such as Jumièges and Fontenelle (Saint-Wandrille), and rebuilt or endowed the church of Saint Peter at Rouen, which later took his name as the Abbey of Saint-Ouen. He sought to raise clerical discipline, opposed simony, and encouraged regular monastic observance.

Ouen remained a significant figure in Neustrian politics throughout his episcopate. He took part in councils and in the shifting alliances among kings, queens, and mayors of the palace, including dealings connected with Ebroin of Neustria. Late in life he travelled on ecclesiastical and political business, including journeys toward the Austrasian frontier. He died at Clichy, near Paris, on 24 August, most probably in 684, in what his early biographers reckoned as the forty-third year of his episcopate. His body was brought back to Rouen and buried in the church of Saint Peter that he had fostered; the tomb became a focus of local veneration, and the monastery that grew around it became one of the chief abbeys of Normandy.

He was honoured as a confessor rather than a martyr, and his feast has been kept on 24 August in the Roman Martyrology and in the church of Rouen. The medieval cult spread through Normandy and, after the Norman Conquest, into England, where churches were dedicated to him. Because his sanctity was recognized by popular devotion and liturgical observance long before the later centralized process of canonization, no individual pope is recorded as having formally canonized him. He is remembered above all as patron of the city of Rouen.
