Biography

Short Description

Philip Benizi (Filippo Benizzi), a thirteenth-century Florentine priest of the Order of the Servants of Mary, was born in Florence in 1233 to the noble Benizi family. After early schooling in his native city he studied medicine and philosophy at the universities of Paris and Padua and took a doctorate in medicine. Traditional accounts place his religious vocation in the mid-1250s: while praying in a Servite church in Florence he is said to have been drawn to the recently founded mendicant congregation dedicated to the Virgin Mary. He received the Servite habit around 1254, spent a period of formation that included time at the order’s hermitage of Monte Senario in the hills above Florence, and was later ordained a priest. He never married and lived thereafter as a celibate religious.

As a priest he became known as a preacher and as a visitor of Servite houses in central Italy. In 1267 the order elected him prior general, an office he retained until his death. In that role he worked to stabilize a still-young congregation, to obtain fuller papal recognition of its rule and privileges, and to found or strengthen houses in Italy and beyond, sending friars into regions such as France and the German lands. He is also remembered in Italian civic tradition as a peacemaker amid the Guelph–Ghibelline conflicts of the later thirteenth century, intervening in factional strife in Tuscany and neighboring territories. A long-standing hagiographical tradition holds that during the prolonged vacancy of the Holy See after the death of Pope Clement IV (1268–1271) some electors considered him a possible pope and that he withdrew into hiding, often localized on Monte Amiata, in order to avoid election. That episode is widely repeated in later Servite and popular sources but is not independently confirmed by contemporary records of the papal election itself; he was never Bishop of Rome.

In his last years Benizi continued to visit communities of his order. In August 1285, while at the Servite house in Todi in Umbria, he fell ill and died on 22 August. He was buried in the Servite church of that city, which became the center of his tomb-cult. Devotion to him spread first within the Servite Order and in Tuscany and Umbria. His liturgical cult was recognized in the early modern period, and he was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671. In the General Roman Calendar his feast is kept on 23 August. He is regarded as a principal saint of the Servites and as a patron of Todi. He held no patriarchal see and is classed among the confessors rather than the martyrs.
