Biography

Short Description

Pope Simplicius, venerated in the Catholic Church as a confessor-saint, was bishop of Rome from 468 until his death in 483. The Liber Pontificalis identifies him as a native of Tivoli (ancient Tibur) in Latium and the son of a man named Castinus. No surviving ancient source records the year of his birth, and later guesses on that point are not historically grounded. He succeeded Pope Hilarius at a moment when the Western Roman imperial government was already in advanced collapse. His election and early years as pope therefore coincided with the last phase of imperial rule in Italy rather than with any securely dated personal biography before his accession.

The political setting of his pontificate was the end of the Western Empire and the establishment of Germanic rule in Italy. In 476 the magister militum Odoacer deposed the last Western emperor, Romulus Augustulus, and thereafter governed Italy as king. Simplicius remained in Rome and continued to administer the Roman church, its clergy, and its property under the new regime. The papacy did not cease to function, and the surviving notices of his reign show a bishop still able to consecrate churches, assign priests, and correspond with the East. Relations with Odoacer appear to have been workable enough that the Roman see was not driven from the city or stripped of its ordinary pastoral role, even as secular imperial authority in the West disappeared.

The chief theological struggle of his years as pope was the defense of the Council of Chalcedon (451) against Monophysite (miaphysite) opposition in Egypt and the wider Eastern church. Simplicius opposed Monophysite claimants to the see of Alexandria, including Timothy II Aelurus and later Peter Mongus, and he pressed Patriarch Acacius of Constantinople and the Eastern emperor Zeno to refuse them communion and to uphold Chalcedonian christology. Toward the end of his life Zeno issued the Henotikon (482), a compromise formula that Rome regarded as undermining Chalcedon. The resulting breach with Constantinople, which became the Acacian schism under Simplicius’s successor Felix III, was already taking shape in Simplicius’s last year. He also sought to maintain the traditional claims of the Roman see in the prefecture of Illyricum, which Constantinople increasingly treated as belonging to its own sphere of jurisdiction.

In Rome he is credited with consecrating several churches, notably the round church of Saint Stephen on the Caelian Hill (Santo Stefano Rotondo) and the church of Saint Bibiana, and with establishing a church dedicated to Saint Andrew near Santa Maria Maggiore. He organized pastoral care at a number of Roman basilicas by assigning priests to celebrate the liturgy in them, an administrative measure that helped stabilize worship in the city after the political shocks of the 470s. The Liber Pontificalis and related notices present him as a pope concerned with ecclesiastical discipline, the inalienability of church property, and the continuity of Roman liturgical life rather than as a monastic founder or a figure attached to a later religious order.

Simplicius died in Rome on 10 March 483 and was buried in the portico of the Constantinian basilica of Saint Peter on the Vatican Hill. He was succeeded by Felix III. The Roman church commemorated him as a saint and confessor; his feast is kept on 10 March, the date on which he is entered in the Roman Martyrology. After the calendar reform of 1969 he was not retained on the General Roman Calendar, but the martyrological commemoration remains. No well-attested medieval or modern tradition assigns him a wide list of specific patronages of places, trades, or causes, and nothing reliable is known of a wife or children. His historical importance lies in holding the Roman see through the fall of the Western Empire and in refusing to abandon Chalcedon as Eastern imperial policy shifted toward compromise with its opponents.
