Biography

Short Description

Saint Remigius, known in French as Remi or Rémi and styled Confessor in Western liturgical books, was Bishop of Reims in late antique Gaul. He was born in 437 at Cerny-en-Laonnois near Laon into a Gallo-Roman aristocratic family. His father Emilius was count of Laon and his mother Cilinia was later venerated as a saint; his brother Principius became bishop of Soissons. Educated in the surviving classical tradition of fifth-century Gaul, Remigius acquired a reputation for learning and eloquence. At about the age of twenty-two he was elected bishop of Reims, succeeding Bennadius, and held the see for more than seventy years.

The central event of his episcopate was the baptism of Clovis I, king of the Salian Franks. Clovis, a pagan, had married the Catholic Burgundian Clotilde. After a military crisis traditionally identified with the Battle of Tolbiac, he sought instruction from Remigius and was baptized at Reims together with a large number of Frankish warriors. Later tradition placed the ceremony on Christmas of 496, though historians have also proposed 498 or 508. The baptism aligned the Frankish monarchy with Nicene Catholicism rather than the Arianism common among other Germanic peoples and became a foundational episode in the religious history of the Frankish kingdoms. Gregory of Tours, writing in the later sixth century, is the principal narrative source for the event.

Remigius remained active in church administration and at the Frankish court. A handful of his letters survive, including a congratulatory note to Clovis after the victory over the Visigoths at Vouillé in 507 and correspondence with Pope Hormisdas. He is associated with the foundation or restoration of churches and with missionary work among the Franks. He died in Reims on 13 January 533 and was buried in the church of Saint Christopher, later the Abbey of Saint-Remi, where his relics became a focus of pilgrimage. In the ninth century Archbishop Hincmar of Reims composed a vita that combined earlier tradition with legendary material, most famously the story of the Holy Ampulla used in subsequent French royal coronations.

Veneration of Remigius is attested from an early date. His principal feast in the Roman calendar is 1 October, linked to the translation of his relics; 13 January marks the anniversary of his death. He is the patron of the city of Reims. While later medieval writers sometimes presented him as a national apostle of the Franks, his securely attested historical role is that of the bishop who baptized Clovis and thereby oriented the emerging Frankish kingdom toward Catholic Christianity in the generations after the end of Roman rule in Gaul.
