Biography

Short Description

The title Confessor Rufinus designates a Christian holy man named Rufinus who was remembered as a confessor of the faith. In early Christian usage a confessor was typically a person who had suffered imprisonment, exile, or other hardship for publicly professing Christianity, yet had not died a martyr's death; the term was also applied more broadly to saintly priests and monks. Several individuals named Rufinus appear in Latin martyrologies, Greek synaxaria, and patristic literature, and surviving notices are often limited to a name, a place of commemoration, and a brief epithet. As a result, a unique biography for an otherwise unspecified Confessor Rufinus cannot be reconstructed with certainty from reliable historical sources.

The most fully documented ecclesiastical figure of this name is Tyrannius Rufinus, commonly called Rufinus of Aquileia, a priest, monk, and translator who lived in the later fourth and early fifth centuries. He was born at Concordia, a town in the region of Aquileia in northern Italy, received a classical education at Rome, and formed a youthful friendship with Jerome. After baptism he spent years among the monks of Egypt, studying under Didymus the Blind at Alexandria and visiting the desert communities of Nitria and Scetis. He later settled on the Mount of Olives at Jerusalem, where he and the Roman aristocrat Melania the Elder established a double monastery. Ordained to the priesthood by John of Jerusalem, Rufinus devoted himself to rendering Greek theological works into Latin. His versions of Origen, of Eusebius of Caesarea's Ecclesiastical History, of sermons by Basil and Gregory of Nazianzus, and of an account of the Egyptian monks made a large body of Eastern Christian literature available to Latin readers. A dispute with Jerome over the orthodoxy of Origen led to a prolonged and bitter literary controversy. Rufinus spent his final years in Italy and died in Sicily in the early fifth century while seeking safety from the Gothic invasions.

Other saints named Rufinus are recorded in the martyrological tradition. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Rufinus, regarded as the first bishop of Assisi in Umbria, as a martyr on 11 August; local tradition at Assisi has long associated him with the city's cathedral. On 14 June the same martyrology lists Rufinus and Valerius as martyrs at Soissons in Gaul, said to have been put to death in the persecution under Diocletian. Additional entries in the Hieronymian Martyrology and in regional calendars mention clerics and laymen named Rufinus at Rome, in Campania, in Africa, and elsewhere, sometimes with the title of confessor rather than martyr. These notices rarely supply parentage, dates of birth, or detailed accounts of their lives, and later medieval legendaries sometimes conflated distinct persons or supplied conventional miracle stories.

Because the historical evidence for most of these figures is sparse, many particulars remain unknown. No Confessor Rufinus is recorded as having occupied the see of Rome or any of the ancient patriarchal thrones. Formal processes of canonization in the later medieval or modern sense are not attested for the early Rufini; their cult, where it existed, arose from local liturgical commemoration. Patronages, places of burial, and family circumstances are likewise unrecorded or rest on unverifiable local tradition. The memory of Confessor Rufinus therefore belongs to the large company of early Christian saints whose names were preserved in the calendar even when the details of their earthly lives had already faded from reliable historical view.
