Biography

Short Description

Satyrus (also spelled Saturus or, in Italian sources, Satiro), commemorated as Confessor Satyrus, was a fourth-century Christian of the Roman senatorial class, venerated especially at Milan. He was the brother of Ambrose, bishop of Milan, and of the consecrated virgin Marcellina. Their father held high imperial office in the western provinces of the empire, and the household combined Roman public service with Christian belief. Almost everything that can be said of Satyrus with historical confidence comes from Ambrose’s two books De excessu fratris Satyri, funeral discourses delivered after Satyrus’s death, together with brief later notices in martyrologies. No contemporary source records the year or place of his birth; later dates sometimes assigned to his birth are conjectural and are not used here.

Satyrus followed the ordinary career of a well-born Roman: he trained in the law, practised as an advocate, and held provincial administrative office, described in the sources as a prefecture. When Ambrose, formerly consular governor of Liguria and Aemilia, was chosen bishop of Milan in 374, Satyrus withdrew from public office in order to administer the family’s property and to free his brother for episcopal work. Ambrose portrays him as just in business, generous to the poor, unwilling to profit by injustice, and personally austere, while making clear that Satyrus remained a layman and was never ordained.

Ambrose relates that Satyrus travelled to Africa to recover family property or debts. On the return voyage the ship was wrecked. Satyrus wore a small case containing the Eucharist about his neck; according to his brother he committed himself to the sea and was preserved, an episode later read as a sign of devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Not long after he reached Milan he fell ill and died. The year generally associated with Ambrose’s orations, and therefore with the death, is 378, though a neighbouring year is occasionally given in older handbooks. He was buried at Milan near the tombs of martyrs. Because he died in peace rather than by violence, the Church remembers him as a confessor rather than a martyr.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 17 September with the notice that his outstanding merits are recorded by his brother Ambrose. His name was given to a Milanese church, Santa Maria presso San Satiro, whose medieval foundation reflects an already established local cult. He was never pope or patriarch, belonged to no religious order, and is not documented as having had a spouse or children. His cult remained primarily local to Milan, and no extensive list of patronages is attached to him in the historical record. Beyond Ambrose’s testimony the life is obscure, and silence is preferable to filling gaps with later legend.
