Biography

Short Description

Saint Simplicius, commemorated as Pope and Confessor, was Bishop of Rome from 468 until his death in 483. According to the Liber Pontificalis he was born at Tivoli (ancient Tibur) in Latium, the son of Castinus. No surviving source records the year of his birth or the course of his life before his election as pope. He succeeded Pope Hilarius during the last years of the Western Roman imperial regime. In 476 the Germanic commander Odoacer deposed the emperor Romulus Augustulus and took control of Italy, so that Simplicius’s pontificate coincided with the conventional end of the Western Empire and with the establishment of a new political order under which the Eastern emperor remained a distant suzerain.

His recorded acts concentrate on the defense of the Council of Chalcedon and on the authority of the Roman see in relation to the Eastern patriarchates. He objected to non-Chalcedonian appointments at Alexandria and Antioch and refused to accept compromises that would have blurred the Chalcedonian definition of Christ’s two natures. Near the close of his life the Emperor Zeno promulgated the Henotikon (482), intended to reconcile Chalcedonian and anti-Chalcedonian parties; Simplicius did not endorse it, and conflict with Patriarch Acacius of Constantinople in these years led directly to the Acacian schism that opened under his successor, Pope Felix III. In the Latin West he intervened in episcopal affairs in Italy, Gaul, and Spain and sought to support Catholic clergy and laity under Vandal rule in North Africa.

The Liber Pontificalis attributes to him several measures for the Roman liturgy and fabric of churches. He is said to have dedicated the basilica of Saint Stephen on the Caelian Hill, to have organized the church of Saint Bibiana, and to have assigned priests from the city’s regions to serve in rotation at major basilicas so that the Eucharist and the Divine Office would be celebrated regularly. He also administered church property and insisted on canonical discipline in the filling of sees. Only a modest number of his letters survive, chiefly in later canonical collections; they show a pope concerned with orthodoxy, communion with Rome, and orderly procedure rather than with speculative theology.

Simplicius died at Rome on 10 March 483 and was buried in the basilica of Saint Peter. He has been venerated as a saint in the Latin Church, where martyrologies style him pope and confessor, and he is likewise commemorated on 10 March in the Eastern Orthodox calendar. No reliable ancient testimony records a spouse, children, or profession of monastic vows; he stands in the line of fifth-century Roman bishops rather than in a religious order. Specific patronages attached to his name are not securely documented in historical sources. Because the Liber Pontificalis mixes administrative memory with later formula, historians accept the outline and dates of his pontificate while treating anecdotal detail with caution.
