Biography

Short Description

Saint Stephen the Confessor, commonly identified in Eastern Orthodox tradition as Stephen of Surozh (Sugdaea), was an eighth-century monk-bishop of the Byzantine Church. The principal source for his life is a hagiographical Life preserved in Greek and, in a more elaborate form, in Slavonic. According to this tradition he was a native of Cappadocia who received a thorough education at Constantinople. From youth he adopted the monastic life and became known for ascetic practice and theological learning. Patriarch Germanus I of Constantinople, who held the see from 715 until 730, is reported to have consecrated him archbishop of Surozh, a Greek see on the southeastern coast of the Crimean peninsula, later associated with the medieval city of Sudak. No contemporary chronicle supplies a year of birth, and none should be inferred from the date of his consecration or from the patriarchate of Germanus.

Stephen’s ministry fell in the first phase of Byzantine Iconoclasm. Emperor Leo III the Isaurian (reigned 717–741) initiated a policy against the public veneration of icons. The Life presents Stephen as a firm defender of iconodulism who was summoned from Crimea to Constantinople, interrogated, imprisoned, and subjected to physical ill-treatment for refusing to accept the imperial policy. Hagiographical narratives of this kind regularly heighten the confrontation between saint and emperor; independent corroboration of the specific episodes is lacking, but the setting is historically coherent: Crimean sees remained in communion with iconophile circles, and Germanus himself was deposed in 730 for opposing Leo’s measures. After the death of Leo III, the tradition states that Stephen was able to return to Surozh and to resume the care of his flock.

He is said to have lived to an advanced age and to have died in peace among his people, which is the basis of his title of Confessor rather than Martyr. No reliable source records the year or the precise place of his death or burial. A later Slavonic recension of the Life inserts an episode in which a Rus’ prince named Bravlin attacks Surozh, is stricken with illness after plundering the church of Saint Sophia there, and is healed after restoring the loot and receiving baptism. Historians of early Rus’ have long discussed this passage; it cannot be dated securely and may reflect ninth- or tenth-century conditions rather than Stephen’s own lifetime. It does, however, attest to the continuing local cult of the archbishop in Crimea and to the transmission of his dossier among Slavic Christians.

Stephen is commemorated on 15 December in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar. He was neither pope nor patriarch; Surozh was an archiepiscopal see, not a patriarchal throne. The sources depict him as a monk from his youth, and there is no record of a wife or of children. His sanctity was recognized by local and synodal veneration rather than by a later papal canonization of the medieval Western type, so no individual canonizing or beatifying authority can be named. It should be added that Orthodox synaxaria also remember other monks named Stephen who suffered as confessors during the second iconoclastic period under Leo V the Armenian in the early ninth century, and that Latin martyrologies contain still further confessors of the same name. When the title Confessor Stephen is used without further qualification in Greek and Slavic menologia, it most often denotes the archbishop of Surozh. Many biographical particulars that later readers might wish to know—exact dates, the name of his monastery of profession, the site of his tomb—remain unknown.
