Biography

Short Description

The designation Confessor Vincent does not correspond to one uniquely identifiable historical individual in the major martyrologies, synaxaria, or modern scholarly hagiographical dictionaries. In traditional Western usage the word Confessor following a saint's name indicated that the person had borne witness to the Christian faith through a holy life, monastic profession, or suffering that stopped short of martyrdom. Multiple men named Vincent received this title in different centuries.

One such figure is the fifth-century monk of Lérins who wrote the Commonitorium, a treatise that proposed the famous criterion of universality, antiquity, and consent for discerning authentic tradition. Later calendars assigned him a feast on 24 May and remembered him as a priest and monk outstanding in scriptural learning. Another is the Valencian Dominican preacher Vincent Ferrer, who died in Brittany in the early fifteenth century and was canonized a few decades later. A third is the French priest Vincent de Paul, founder of the Congregation of the Mission, who died in Paris in 1660 and was canonized in the eighteenth century. Each possesses a separate cult, distinct feast day, and independent biographical tradition.

Because the supplied name does not specify which of these or still other more obscure Vincents is intended, no verified year of birth, year of death, or precise place of origin can be entered. Birth dates for late-antique monks are almost never recorded in contemporary sources, and even death dates are often approximate. Places of burial and lists of patronages likewise belong to particular cults and cannot be transferred from one Vincent to an undifferentiated Confessor Vincent without conjecture.

Reliable historical method therefore requires that the present record remain incomplete. Local liturgical books, diocesan processes, or unpublished medieval calendars might one day attach the title to a specific person, but such an identification is not available from the standard published sources. The factual fields are left empty wherever a fact cannot be confirmed for a uniquely determined subject.
