Biography

Short Description

Saint Wigbert (also rendered Wigberht or Wictbert) was an Anglo-Saxon priest and Benedictine monk of the eighth century who took part in the missionary work of Saint Boniface among the peoples of Hesse and Thuringia. He was a native of the kingdom of Wessex in England. After embracing the monastic life and receiving priestly ordination in his homeland, he crossed to the Continent to join Boniface, a fellow West Saxon, in the labor of converting still-pagan or only recently evangelized Germanic tribes and of organizing a stable church life according to Roman and Benedictine norms.

Boniface established a monastery at Fritzlar in Hesse, in the 720s or early 730s, as a center of worship, education, and missionary outreach, and appointed Wigbert its abbot. Under Wigbert’s direction the community observed the Rule of Saint Benedict with regularity. He was remembered for personal austerity, for competence in teaching the Scriptures, and for forming younger monks and clergy who could continue the mission. He is also associated with the monastery of Ohrdruf in Thuringia, another Bonifatian foundation, which he is said to have governed for a period and which likewise served as a school for missionaries.

Toward the close of his life Wigbert returned to Fritzlar. A ninth-century Life written by Lupus of Ferrières, drawing on earlier local tradition, presents him as a man of holiness who possessed foreknowledge of his own death. He died at Fritzlar on 13 August, the year customarily assigned being 747, and was buried there. Subsequently his relics were translated to the abbey of Hersfeld, where his cult continued to be observed. He is venerated as a confessor—that is, a saint who witnessed to the faith by a holy life rather than by martyrdom—and his feast is kept on 13 August.

The surviving evidence for Wigbert’s career is limited. It consists chiefly of the vita by Lupus, scattered references in the correspondence of Boniface and of Lull of Mainz, and entries in later martyrologies. No contemporary document records the year of his birth, the names of his parents, or the details of his early formation in England. Even the precise year of his death is known only by later calculation. Within those limits he stands as a representative figure of the Anglo-Saxon monastic missionaries who, in the first half of the eighth century, helped to implant Benedictine observance and an organized church structure in the interior of what is now Germany.
