Biography

Short Description

Willibrord, commemorated in the Western church as a bishop and confessor and long known as the Apostle of the Frisians, was born in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria in the seventh century. Later tradition, drawing on the statement of Alcuin of York that the saint died in his eighty-first year in 739, places the birth in or about 658, though no contemporary record of the exact year survives. His father, Wilgils (also called Wilgis), a man of some standing, later became a hermit on the south bank of the Humber and was himself honoured as a saint. While still a boy, Willibrord was entrusted to the monastery of Ripon, then governed by Saint Wilfrid, a leading champion of Roman ecclesiastical customs in Northumbria after the Synod of Whitby. At Ripon he received a biblical and liberal education, was formed in the Benedictine rule, and was professed as a monk, remaining there until early adulthood.

Desiring a stricter life and a deeper preparation for missionary work, Willibrord went to Ireland when he was about twenty years old and spent some twelve years at the monastery of Rath Melsigi, in the south-east of the island. That house, associated with the Northumbrian priest Egbert and with Wigbert, was a centre of learning and of plans for the conversion of the still pagan continental Saxons and Frisians. In 690, following Egbert’s long-standing intention to evangelize Frisia, Willibrord sailed with eleven companions to the Continent. They arrived at a favourable moment: Pepin of Herstal, mayor of the palace of Austrasia, had recently defeated the Frisian king Radbod and taken control of western Frisia, including the old Roman fortress of Traiectum (Utrecht). Pepin received the missionaries, granted them security and lands, and encouraged their work among the Frisians. Willibrord soon went to Rome to obtain papal authorization for the mission and relics for new churches. In 695 he was again in Rome, where Pope Sergius I consecrated him bishop, giving him the name Clement; Frankish and English sources style him archbishop of the Frisians. He fixed his see at Utrecht, which became the mother church of the Frisian mission.

Under the protection of the Pippinid mayors, Willibrord organized diocesan life, ordained clergy, and founded churches across Frisia and in neighbouring districts of the Frankish frontier, including parts of what are now the Netherlands, Belgium, and western Germany. About 698 Abbess Irmina of Oeren, a noblewoman closely connected with Pepin’s family, granted him an estate at Echternach in the valley of the Sûre. There he established a Benedictine monastery that served as a missionary base, a place of retreat, and a centre of book production; a calendar and other manuscripts associated with his circle survive. The death of Pepin in 714 and the subsequent resurgence of Radbod brought a violent interruption: churches were destroyed, priests expelled, and Willibrord withdrew into Frankish territory, spending much of this period at Echternach. Charles Martel’s campaigns restored Frankish authority in Frisia, and the aged bishop returned to his see. Alcuin’s Life records a journey to the Danes, whose king Ongendus received him without converting, and the return of a group of boys to be raised as Christians; it also notes preaching in Thuringia. For a period the West Saxon missionary Winfrid, later known as Saint Boniface, worked in Frisia under Willibrord’s authority before turning to the German mission.

Willibrord died at his monastery of Echternach on 7 November 739 and was buried there. His tomb became a shrine, and the abbey church developed into a major pilgrimage site. Toward the end of the eighth century Alcuin, at the request of Beornrad, abbot of Echternach and archbishop of Sens, wrote the Vita Willibrordi, which, together with Bede’s notices in the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, is the chief narrative source for the saint’s life. Willibrord’s cult is of the ancient, pre-congregation type; he was not the subject of a later formal papal canonization. His feast is kept on 7 November. He is the principal patron saint of Luxembourg and is also honoured as a patron of the Netherlands and of the city and archdiocese of Utrecht. Popular devotion, especially in connection with the medieval hopping procession still held at Echternach, has long invoked him against epilepsy, convulsions, and related afflictions. Through the churches and monasteries he founded, and through the link he forged between the English, Irish, Roman, and Frankish churches, he stands as one of the principal figures in the Christianization of the Low Countries in the early Middle Ages.
