Biography

Short Description

The name Zozimus (also spelled Zosimus or Zosimas; Greek Ζώσιμος) was borne by several Christian holy men in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. In traditional Western hagiography the word “Confessor” is a class title, not a personal name: it ordinarily marks a male saint who was not a martyr, or, in a stricter Eastern sense, one who suffered for the faith without being put to death. Standard historical and liturgical reference works do not isolate a single, securely documented biography under the exact heading “Confessor Zozimus.” Without a feast day, see, monastery, or other disambiguating detail, dates of birth and death, places of origin and burial, and any patronage cannot be assigned to one individual without conjecture, which the sources do not justify.

One frequently encountered homonym is Pope Saint Zosimus, a Greek cleric who occupied the Roman see for a little more than a year in the early fifth century and died in 418. He is remembered chiefly for his involvement in the Pelagian controversy and for correspondence with the churches of Gaul and Africa. He is commemorated in the West on 26 December. He is not, however, customarily styled “Confessor” as his primary title, and nothing reliable is known of his year or place of birth; later claims that he came from Calabria or from the East remain unverified. Because the subject of this notice is given as “Confessor Zozimus” rather than as pope, identification with this pontiff is not assumed.

Another candidate in Western calendars is Saint Zosimus of Syracuse, a Sicilian monk of the sixth and seventh centuries. According to the monastic tradition attached to him, he was dedicated as an infant to the monastery of Saint Lucy near Syracuse, rose to be its abbot, and was later chosen bishop of Syracuse. He is treated as a holy bishop and confessor and is often assigned a feast on 30 March; a death in the mid-seventh century is commonly repeated, but a verified year of birth is not preserved. In the Christian East the Palestinian abbot Saint Zosimas (fifth–sixth century), associated in monastic legend with the finding of Saint Mary of Egypt, is venerated, typically on 4 April, as a monastic father rather than under the title Confessor. His life is known almost entirely from hagiographical narrative, not from contemporary administrative record.

Still other martyrs and monks named Zosimus appear in the Roman Martyrology and in Eastern synaxaria, including figures linked with Cilicia and Antioch, and, in later Slavic monasticism, saints such as Zosima of Solovki. For most of these homonyms the surviving notices are late, liturgical, and often legendary. In the absence of a unique identifier attached to “Confessor Zozimus,” it is not possible to state a verified birth year, death year, birthplace, burial place, religious order, or list of patronages. The name itself is male, and that is the only biographical particular that can be affirmed without guessing among several distinct historical and cultic figures.
