Biography

Short Description

Armogastes (also spelled Armogast or Armogastus) was a Catholic layman of high rank in the fifth-century Vandal Kingdom of North Africa. He held the office of count (comes) in the household of Theodoric, a son of King Genseric (Geiseric), who had established Vandal rule after the crossing from Spain in 429 and the capture of Carthage in 439. Nearly everything that can be said of him with historical confidence comes from a single near-contemporary narrative, the Historia persecutionis Africanae provinciae of Victor, bishop of Vita, written about 484. Victor wrote as a Catholic cleric documenting the sufferings of the Nicene Church under Arian Vandal kings, and he presents Armogastes as a man of firm faith who would not accept Arian rebaptism.

The Vandal court, like much of the Vandal elite, professed Arian Christianity and treated Catholic (Homoousian) belief as error. Pressure on prominent Catholics to conform was a recurring instrument of policy. Theodoric sought to force Armogastes into the Arian communion. When the count refused, he was tortured: according to Victor he was stretched on the rack and afterwards hung head-downward by one foot. In that account Armogastes remained steadfast, appearing almost unaffected by the pain and occupying himself with psalms. His persecutors then considered putting him to death, but an Arian adviser warned that execution would only give the Catholics a martyr and a shrine. The officers therefore chose punishments meant to humiliate rather than to kill.

Armogastes was sent into the province of Byzacena and set to the hard labor of cutting ditches in the countryside. Even that exile was judged insufficiently obscure. Fearing that Catholics would still seek him out and honor him, the authorities reduced him further to the life of a cowherd. In that condition he lived out his remaining days and died a confessor of the faith rather than a martyr slain in the act of torture. No chronicle preserves the year of his birth or of his death. The events belong to the reign of Genseric (who died in 477) and thus to the middle decades of the fifth century. His place of burial is unknown, as are his parentage, native city, and any family he may have had.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates Armogastes together with two other African confessors of the same persecution, Saturus and Archinimus. Saturus had been procurator of the household of Huneric, another of Genseric’s sons; he likewise refused Arianization, lost office and property, and withstood attempts to break him through threats involving his family. Archinimus, a Catholic of the town of Mascula, rejected a ruse by which officials tried to register him as having converted. None of the three is recorded as having been executed under torture; Vandal policy at that moment preferred to deny them the public status of martyrs. Their common feast is kept on 29 March. They were venerated from antiquity in the African and Roman martyrological tradition; no later papal canonization bull is attached to their names, and Armogastes has no widely attested specialized patronages.
