Biography

Short Description

Saint Conleth (Irish: Conláed; also Conlaeth, Conlaid, Conlath, or Conlaith) was an Irish hermit, craftsman, and the first bishop of Kildare, active in Leinster in the late fifth and early sixth centuries. Almost nothing can be verified about his parentage, birthplace, or early years; later genealogies and local tradition associate him with the Irish of Leinster and with the Kildare district, but these claims cannot be independently confirmed. He is remembered as having lived as a solitary at Old Connell (Seanconnell) on the River Liffey, near present-day Newbridge in County Kildare, combining a life of prayer with skilled work in gold and silver. That hermitage, rather than any documented birthplace, is the earliest geographical point to which the sources attach him.

The principal early witness is the seventh-century Latin Life of Saint Brigid by Cogitosus, written at Kildare about a century after the events it describes. Cogitosus presents Conleth as the holy and just bishop who served alongside Brigid at her double monastery of Kildare, which housed both women and men and became one of the chief churches of Leinster. According to this tradition, Brigid invited the hermit from Old Connell to act as priest and bishop for her community. Cogitosus also records that Conleth was an accomplished worker in precious metals who made sacred vessels and ornaments for the church, and that he was accustomed to travel to Rome. Later medieval lives of Brigid expand this picture, making Conleth her close collaborator and the first occupant of the see of Kildare, thereafter inseparably linked with her cult. He is thus a type of the artisan-bishop of the early Irish monastic church rather than a member of any later named religious order.

Tradition, followed by Irish annals and martyrologies, places his death in 519. Later hagiography relates that he set out on pilgrimage to Rome against Brigid’s advice and was killed by wolves in the woods of Leinster; that story is not in Cogitosus and should be treated as legendary colour rather than established fact. He was buried at Kildare, and his tomb, together with Brigid’s, became a focus of pilgrimage. In 799 the Irish annals record that his relics were placed in a shrine of gold and silver. His feast has been kept on 3 May or 4 May; 4 May is the date most commonly given in modern calendars. He is venerated as a patron of the Diocese of Kildare (later Kildare and Leighlin) and of Kildare and Newbridge, the latter near his former hermitage.

No writings by Conleth survive, and he is known almost entirely through the Brigidine tradition, liturgical commemoration, and brief annalistic notices. Cogitosus remains the earliest substantial source; subsequent vitae and local cult added the pilgrimage and wolf motifs and fixed the traditional death year. Despite the thin contemporary record, Conleth occupies a firm place in the memory of the early Irish church as Brigid’s episcopal partner and as a saint of Leinster whose shrine at Kildare was honoured into the medieval period.
