Biography

Short Description

Conrad of Parzham was born Johann Evangelist Birndorfer on 22 December 1818 in the hamlet of Parzham, near Passau in the Kingdom of Bavaria, the ninth of eleven children of the farmers Bartholomäus Birndorfer and Gertrude Niedermayer. He grew up in a devout rural Catholic household and received only a modest village education, yet from childhood he was noted for prayerfulness, attendance at Mass, and a habit of giving to the poor. After his mother’s death in his early teens he took on heavy work on the family farm; following his father’s death he continued to manage the property until younger siblings were provided for. Neighbors later recalled a young man who combined hard agricultural labor with fasting, night prayer, and pilgrimages to local shrines, including the Marian sanctuary at Altötting. Although a comfortable peasant marriage and inheritance were open to him, he repeatedly postponed such a life in favor of a religious vocation.

Only in 1849, at the age of thirty-one, was he free to enter the Capuchin novitiate at Laufen. He received the religious name Conrad and made his solemn profession in 1852. The order assigned him almost at once to the Capuchin friary attached to the shrine of Our Lady of Altötting, one of the most frequented Marian pilgrimage sites in German-speaking Europe. There he was given the office of porter, or doorkeeper, a post he held without interruption for more than forty years until his death. The work was outwardly humble: answering the bell, receiving pilgrims, distributing alms and leftover food, and directing visitors to the chapel. In practice it placed him at the daily crossroads of thousands of people—peasants, beggars, clergy, and the sick—who came seeking help or a blessing.

Contemporaries described Brother Conrad as a man of extreme personal austerity and of unusual gentleness toward others. He spent long hours in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament and in recitation of the rosary, slept little, and observed a severe diet, yet he was remembered as patient, even-tempered, and ready to listen. Pilgrims attributed to him the gifts of counsel, knowledge of hidden sins or future events, and numerous cures; such reports circulated widely in Bavaria already during his lifetime. He remained a lay brother and never sought ordination or any office beyond the porter’s lodge. He died at the Altötting friary on 21 April 1894.

A popular cultus formed quickly around his tomb in the Capuchin church. The cause of beatification advanced in the early twentieth century; Pope Pius XI beatified him on 15 June 1930 and canonized him on 20 May 1934. His liturgical feast is kept on 21 April, the anniversary of his death. In Catholic devotion he is invoked especially as a patron of doorkeepers and of Catholic youth, and his shrine at Altötting remains a place of pilgrimage.
