Biography

Short Description

Pierina Betrone, later known in religion as Sister Maria Consolata Betrone, was born on 6 April 1903 in Saluzzo, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, to a Catholic family of modest means. Her father, Pietro Betrone, worked as a baker and later operated a restaurant, and the family settled in Turin. After her schooling she helped in the family business. From youth she felt drawn to prayer and to a consecrated life, though her path into the cloister was not immediate or simple.

She made more than one unsuccessful attempt to enter active congregations, including a period with the Sisters of Charity and another with the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (Salesian Sisters), before concluding that her vocation was contemplative. In 1930 she entered the monastery of the Capuchin Poor Clares in Turin and received the name Maria Consolata. She professed vows in that community and lived the enclosed Franciscan rule of the Capuchin Poor Clares, combining poverty, enclosure, and a life of liturgical and private prayer.

Within the cloister she became known for a spirituality of reparation centered on a short, constantly repeated act of love: "Jesus, Mary, I love you, save souls." According to notes she kept and to the later testimony of her confessor, the priest Lorenzo Sales, she believed she received interior locutions encouraging this invocation as an offering of love and a means of seeking the salvation of souls. She accepted illness and hidden suffering as a share in Christ's Passion. Sales later published material drawn from her life and writings, notably in the book Jesus Appeals to the World, which spread her reputation among Catholics interested in Eucharistic and reparative devotion.

Sister Consolata Betrone died on 18 July 1946 at the Capuchin Poor Clare monastery of Moriondo in Moncalieri, near Turin, at the age of forty-three. A cause for her beatification was subsequently introduced, and in the Catholic Church she is regarded as a Servant of God. She has not been beatified or canonized. Her memory remains tied to twentieth-century Italian contemplative life and to the brief prayer of love and reparation associated with her name.
