Biography

Short Description

Constantine of Murom (Russian: Konstantin Muromsky), traditionally called Constantine Sviatoslavich, is a Rus' prince-saint commemorated by the Russian Orthodox Church as an enlightener of the city of Murom. Church tradition makes him a descendant of Saint Vladimir and a son of Prince Sviatoslav of Chernigov. Historians commonly identify him with Yaroslav Sviatoslavich, a son of Sviatoslav II of Kiev, who held Murom in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries and whose death is recorded in the chronicles in 1129. That identification is plausible but not beyond dispute: the surviving Life is a much later composition, and Constantine’s year of birth is nowhere reliably recorded.

The principal narrative of his career is the sixteenth-century Tale of the Establishment of Christianity in Murom. According to that account, Constantine received Murom as his appanage when its people were still pagan and determined to convert them. He first sent his son Michael (Mikhail) into the city; the inhabitants killed the young prince. Constantine then approached Murom with an armed following. Tradition relates that the townsmen meant to resist him as well, until he came forth bearing an icon of the Mother of God, after which they accepted his rule and baptism. His other son, Theodore (Fyodor), is described as sharing in the work of conversion and in the subsequent government of the principality.

After the city’s submission Constantine is said to have founded churches, notably a church of the Annunciation and a church of the passion-bearers Boris and Gleb, in which Michael was buried. The hagiographer portrays his remaining years as those of a just and devout prince. Church tradition dates his death to 1129 and states that he was buried in the Annunciation church at Murom. Michael and Theodore are commemorated with him. Relics ascribed to the three princes were later enshrined at Murom, where they became the centre of a local cult. In 1547 the Moscow council under Metropolitan Macarius numbered Constantine and his sons among the saints of the Russian Church. Their chief feast is 21 May. The original Annunciation church was succeeded by the Annunciation Monastery, which remained the place of their veneration.

Independent evidence is thin. Chronicle notices of Yaroslav of Murom confirm a princely career and a death in 1129, but they do not describe the dramatic conversion scene of the Life. The Christianization of Murom was almost certainly more gradual than the hagiography allows, and the Tale reflects Muscovite religious concerns of the 1500s as well as twelfth-century memory. Even so, Constantine has been honoured for centuries as prince-enlightener and wonderworker of Murom, and his cult remains on the calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church.
