Biography

Constantine Vendrame was born on 27 August 1893 in San Martino di Colle Umberto, in the province of Treviso in the Veneto region of northern Italy. He grew up in a Catholic rural setting and entered the Salesians of Don Bosco, the religious congregation founded in the nineteenth century by Saint John Bosco for the Christian education of the young and for missionary apostolate. After his formation he was ordained a priest and in 1924 was sent to the Catholic missions in Northeast India, then part of British India, where the Salesians had been entrusted with the Assam mission territory.

Vendrame spent the greater part of his priestly life among the Khasi people of the Khasi Hills, in the region that is now the Indian state of Meghalaya. He learned the Khasi language and devoted himself to an itinerant apostolate, traveling on foot from village to village to preach, instruct catechumens, and administer the sacraments. Later Catholic and Salesian accounts present him as an exceptionally zealous missionary and credit him with a substantial share in the growth of the Catholic community among the Khasis. For this reason he came to be called the Apostle of the Khasi Hills. He did not become a bishop; his historical reputation is that of a pioneer missionary priest rather than a church administrator.

His work unfolded in a mountainous region with limited roads and a still-small Catholic presence, during the first decades of organized Salesian activity in Assam. Besides the Khasi Hills he also served in other parts of the Northeast Indian missions. Reliable sources emphasize his identification with local people and his willingness to accept hardship, while remaining cautious about unverifiable numerical claims sometimes attached to his name in popular retellings.

Vendrame died on 30 January 1957 at Dibrugarh in Assam, India. Memory of his missionary labors continued among Catholics in Northeast India, and the Salesians promoted a cause for his canonization. He is recognized as a Servant of God, the first formal stage of a Catholic canonization process, indicating that a diocesan inquiry into his life and virtues has been opened. He has not been beatified or canonized. Some details of his early formation and of the precise chronology of his assignments remain known mainly from congregational archives and local church tradition.
