Biography

Short Description

Saint Conval (also known as Convallus or Conwall) was an Irish-born saint of the early medieval church whose memory is tied to Inchinnan in Renfrewshire, within the former Brittonic Kingdom of Strathclyde in what is now southwestern Scotland. Traditional hagiography places him in the sixth century and presents him as a disciple of Saint Kentigern, also called Mungo, the missionary associated with the church of Glasgow. According to these accounts, Conval was the son of an Irish prince who abandoned a secular career in order to embrace the Christian religious life and to assist in the evangelization of northern Britain. No contemporary chronicle or inscription records his birth, and the year of his birth is unknown. The story of his origins belongs to the later medieval tradition that gathered around local saints of the Celtic churches.

Legend holds that Conval crossed the sea from Ireland upon a stone that floated miraculously and came to land at Inchinnan, near the River Clyde. The stone, sometimes called St Conval's Chariot and associated in later folklore with the Argyll Stone, was long treated as a relic of his arrival. At Inchinnan he is said to have established a church and to have ministered to the surrounding population as a confessor and teacher. He is not described as a martyr. The parish church of Inchinnan was dedicated to him, and through the Middle Ages his relics were kept there. A stone sarcophagus found in the vicinity has been connected by local tradition with the saint's burial. His cult was local rather than universal, attested in Scottish liturgical books such as the Aberdeen Breviary and in the dedication of the church at Inchinnan.

Almost nothing about Conval can be verified from sources written in his own lifetime. The floating-stone motif is a common hagiographical topos in Irish and British saints' lives, and the precise chronology of his career cannot be fixed. Historians therefore treat him as a figure of sixth- or early seventh-century date whose historical kernel—an Irish cleric active in Strathclyde and commemorated at Inchinnan—is plausible, while the miraculous details remain legendary. He was not the subject of a formal canonization by a medieval or modern pope; like other saints of the early Celtic churches, he was honoured through popular cult and local liturgical observance.

Conval's feast has been kept on more than one date. Eighteen May appears in a number of calendars and popular listings, while the twenty-eighth of September is found in Scottish tradition. He is regarded as the patron saint of Inchinnan. No reliable evidence survives concerning a spouse or children, nor is he associated with a later religious order such as the Benedictines; he belongs to the earlier, less formally organized monastic and missionary world of the Irish and Brittonic churches. His name continues to be linked with the site of Inchinnan and with the early Christian history of the Clyde valley.
