Biography

Short Description

Corentin of Quimper, known in Latin as Corentinus and in Breton as Kaourintin, is venerated as a fifth-century Breton saint and as the first bishop of Quimper in Cornouaille, in western Armorica (present-day Brittany, France). He is numbered among the Seven Founder Saints of Brittany, together with Pol Aurelian, Tudwal, Brieuc, Malo, Samson of Dol, and Patern of Vannes. No contemporary written source for his life survives. What is known comes from later medieval legend and from early modern compilations of Breton hagiography, above all the work of Albert Le Grand in the seventeenth century. Tradition places his activity in Armorica in the fifth century and commonly assigns his death to about 460, but historians treat that date, and most of the narrative detail attached to him, as conventional rather than demonstrable.

The legendary vita describes Corentin as a hermit who settled in the forested country around Plomodiern, on the slopes of Menez Hom in Cornouaille. He is said to have lived in extreme simplicity beside a spring or fountain. The best-known miracle of his solitude concerns a fish that inhabited the water: each day the hermit cut a piece from the living fish for his meal, and each following day the fish was found restored and whole. The tale was understood as a sign of divine care for an ascetic who refused ordinary provision. According to the same cycle of stories, Gradlon, the semi-legendary king of Cornouaille and the figure associated with the drowned city of Ys, encountered Corentin, recognized his sanctity, and caused him to be made first bishop of Quimper, the royal city at the confluence of the Steir and the Odet. Some later retellings link Corentin’s consecration to Saint Martin of Tours; that link is chronologically strained if Martin’s death in the late fourth century is taken seriously, and it is not accepted as historical fact.

In the episcopal legend, Corentin organizes the church of Cornouaille and becomes the spiritual founder of the see that still bears his name. The Gothic cathedral of Quimper, the Cathédrale Saint-Corentin, is dedicated to him and was for centuries the centre of his cult. Relics attributed to him were kept there until they were scattered in the French Revolution. His principal feast is observed on 12 December. He is invoked as patron of the city of Quimper, of the Diocese of Quimper (today Quimper and Léon), and of the old county of Cornouaille. In the later Middle Ages his tomb was one of the stations of the Tro Breizh, the great circuit pilgrimage that honoured the seven founding saints of Brittany. In art he appears as a bishop, often with a fish as his distinctive attribute, and sometimes in the company of King Gradlon.

The historical person behind the cult cannot be reconstructed in any detail. A bishopric at Quimper is a reality of the early medieval Breton church, and a local founding saint named Corentin was already the object of devotion in the Middle Ages, but the hermitage on Menez Hom, the miraculous fish, and the court of Gradlon belong to hagiographical invention rather than to fifth-century biography. Even so, Corentin remains a central figure in Breton religious and civic identity: the cathedral, the diocese, and the given name Corentin in Brittany all preserve his memory, and he continues to be honoured as the apostle of Cornouaille.
