Biography

Short Description

Cormac Ua Liatháin was a sixth-century Irish monk and saint, a member of the Uí Liatháin, a Munster people whose territory lay in the east of what is now County Cork. He is known almost exclusively from the Latin Life of Saint Columba (Vita Columbae) composed by Adomnán, ninth abbot of Iona, near the end of the seventh century. Adomnán, who calls him Cormac nepos Lethani, presents him as a contemporary of Columba (Colum Cille) and as a monk of the same spiritual circle. No annalistic obit, genealogical tract, or contemporary inscription records the year of his birth or of his death, and later attempts to assign precise dates are not supported by early evidence. His place in the historical record rests on Adomnán’s testimony that he repeatedly put to sea in search of a hermitage in the ocean, a form of peregrinatio characteristic of early Irish monasticism.

Adomnán portrays Cormac as a soldier of Christ whose journeys were known to Columba and, in the narrative, even anticipated by him. The two men appear as associates rather than simply as master and disciple: Columba prophesies about Cormac’s voyages and intercedes for him in prayer, while Cormac acts with considerable independence as a voyager. Nothing in the seventh-century text states that Cormac held episcopal rank, and he is not numbered among the bishops of Rome or among the patriarchs of the Eastern churches. The Life likewise gives no indication that he married or that he lived other than as a monk. Later Irish tradition, reflected in the medieval martyrologies, associated him with the Columban monastery of Durrow (Dairmag) in the Irish midlands and styled him its abbot, but Adomnán himself does not confer that title, and the identification may reflect the later tendency to attach well-known Columban figures to principal houses of the familia.

The voyages occupy three episodes in the Vita Columbae. On the first, Cormac set out from Ireland seeking a desert in the ocean but failed to find the solitude he sought. Columba explained the failure by revealing that one of those on board had left his own monastery without his abbot’s permission, a breach of obedience that, in Columba’s judgment, made the undertaking fruitless. On a subsequent voyage Cormac reached the Orkney Islands. Adomnán relates that Columba, while in the presence of the Pictish king Bridei son of Maelchon, had already asked that king to commend any of Columba’s monks who might come there to the ruler of the Orkneys, so that they would be received without harm. A further voyage carried Cormac far into the northern ocean. For fourteen days the vessel ran before a south wind under full sail. The voyagers then found themselves in waters that appeared covered with terrible small creatures, so dense that the sea could scarcely be seen, which struck the oars and the sides of the skin boat with their stings. In great peril they were delivered, according to Adomnán, when Columba, though far away at Iona, perceived the danger, called the brethren to prayer, and obtained a change of wind that drove the boat southward again. Adomnán does not claim that Cormac ever succeeded in founding a permanent island hermitage.

Medieval Irish calendars commemorate Cormac Ua Liatháin on 21 June, often with the designation abbot of Durrow. The Martyrology of Gorman and the Martyrology of Donegal preserve this notice, which became the basis of his later cult. No early source names his place of burial, and he is not recorded as the patron of a particular town, trade, illness, or cause. Historians treat him as a genuine sixth-century figure whose sea-wanderings, as filtered through Adomnán’s hagiography, illustrate both Irish monastic peregrinatio and the geographical range of sixth-century navigation in northern waters, as far as the Orkneys and possibly beyond. Beyond Adomnán’s chapters and the later martyrological entries, the details of his life remain unknown, and it is necessary to distinguish the seventh-century narrative from subsequent monastic tradition that attached him to Durrow.
