Biography

Short Description

Corneille de la Komela is the French rendering of the name of the Russian Orthodox monastic saint known as Cornelius of Komel or Korniliy Komelsky. He was a monk and founder active in the northern lands of the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Traditional hagiography reports that he was born at Rostov into the boyar family of the Kryukovs. Church sources commonly situate his birth in the 1450s; that date is traditional rather than independently documented in civil records. In youth he is said to have served at a princely court before leaving the world for the monastery.

He received the monastic tonsure at the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, a leading northern Russian house in the tradition of Saint Cyril of Beloozero. After a period of community life he sought greater seclusion and settled in the Komel forest in the Vologda region. There he founded a hermitage that developed into a coenobitic monastery, later called the Kornilievo-Komelsky Monastery, with a church dedicated to the Entry of the Mother of God into the Temple. The house received support from Moscow grand princes and local donors in the early sixteenth century.

Cornelius left a written monastic rule, an ustav that is one of the few such texts from Muscovite Russia. It orders liturgical prayer, manual labor, poverty, and hospitality, and it belongs to the same era as the debates associated with Joseph of Volokolamsk and Nil Sorsky over monastic property and discipline. His Life portrays him as a strict ascetic who nonetheless cared for the poor and for travelers. Disciples formed a community around him, and the monastery became a spiritual center in the Vologda lands.

He died in 1537, on 19 May according to the church calendar, and was buried at the monastery he had founded. The Russian Orthodox Church venerates him as a saint, with principal feast on 19 May. He was neither pope nor patriarch. He lived as a celibate monk and is not recorded as having had a spouse or children. Much of the narrative of his early years depends on the monastic Life rather than on surviving secular archives, so precise details of his childhood remain uncertain even though his role as founder and rule-giver is firmly part of Orthodox tradition.
