Biography

Short Description

Cornelius the Centurion is known from the New Testament Acts of the Apostles (chapters 10–11) as a Roman officer stationed at Caesarea Maritima, the provincial capital of Judaea. He served in the Italian Cohort, traditionally identified as Cohors II Italica Civium Romanorum. The author of Acts describes him as devout and God-fearing together with his household, as one who gave alms generously to the Jewish people and prayed constantly. In the religious vocabulary of the period he belongs to the class of Gentile God-fearers who worshipped the God of Israel without becoming full Jewish proselytes through circumcision. While at prayer he received a vision of an angel who declared that his prayers and alms had been remembered before God and who instructed him to send men to Joppa for Simon Peter, then lodging with Simon the tanner.

Peter received a complementary vision of a great sheet lowered from heaven filled with animals regarded as unclean under Jewish dietary law. A voice commanded him to kill and eat; when he protested, the voice replied that what God had cleansed he must not call common. The vision was repeated three times. Immediately afterward Cornelius’s messengers arrived. Interpreting the vision as a command not to treat any person as unclean, Peter went with them to Caesarea. There Cornelius had gathered relatives and close friends. Peter preached Jesus as Lord of all, crucified and raised, and judge of the living and the dead. While he was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell on the hearers, who spoke in tongues and magnified God. Peter then commanded that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. This episode, often called the conversion of the first uncircumcised Gentiles or a Gentile Pentecost, became a decisive precedent for admitting Gentiles into the Christian community and was later invoked by Peter at the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15).

Beyond the New Testament, later Christian tradition supplied a subsequent career that cannot be confirmed from contemporary sources. Some Eastern hagiographical accounts present Cornelius as leaving military service and serving as a bishop, either of Caesarea in Palestine or of Skepsis (Scepsis) in Mysia in northwestern Asia Minor. Eusebius of Caesarea, writing in the early fourth century, lists early bishops of Caesarea but does not provide a securely identifiable notice confirming Cornelius among them. Stories of later missionary work or martyrdom belong to legend rather than documented history. Neither the date and place of his birth nor those of his death and burial are known from reliable historical evidence.

Cornelius is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Oriental Orthodox churches, and in some Protestant calendars, including Lutheran ones. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 2 February. Eastern Orthodox usage commonly observes him on 13 September and 20 October, with some variation among local calendars. His biblical role as the first recorded Gentile convert of this kind has made him a symbol of the universality of the Christian mission. Specific later patronages of places, professions, or causes are not firmly established in the earliest sources.
