Biography

Short Description

Pope Cornelius was Bishop of Rome from 251 to 253, a short pontificate that nonetheless shaped the Church’s penitential discipline and its sense of unity. After the martyrdom of Pope Fabian in January 250, during the empire-wide persecution ordered by Decius, the Roman clergy left the see vacant for some fourteen months. Only when the immediate danger receded after Decius’s death did they elect Cornelius, a priest of the Roman church. Later tradition, including the Liber Pontificalis, describes him as a Roman by birth, the son of one Castinus. His reputation was that of a moderate pastor rather than a speculative theologian. Almost at once a rigorist minority refused to accept him and consecrated the learned priest Novatian as a rival bishop of Rome, producing the first major antipope. The Novatianist schism spread beyond Italy and survived as a separate sect for centuries.

The dispute turned on the lapsi, Christians who had compromised during the Decian persecution by sacrificing to the pagan gods or by obtaining certificates (libelli) that they had done so. Novatian taught that the Church had no power to restore such persons to communion, even after lifelong penance. Cornelius, backed by a synod of Italian bishops and by Cyprian of Carthage, held that the Church possessed the power of the keys and could reconcile the penitent after public penance scaled to the offence. That milder policy, which distinguished those who had actually sacrificed from those who had only bought certificates, became the prevailing Catholic position. Cyprian’s correspondence with Cornelius is a principal source for the episode. A letter of Cornelius quoted by Eusebius of Caesarea in the Ecclesiastical History lists the Roman clergy of the mid-third century—forty-six priests, seven deacons, seven subdeacons, forty-two acolytes, and fifty-two exorcists, readers and doorkeepers—together with more than fifteen hundred widows and distressed persons supported by the church, an invaluable picture of a well-organized urban Christian community.

Imperial hostility revived under Trebonianus Gallus. Cornelius was arrested and banished to Centumcellae, the Tyrrhenian port later known as Civitavecchia. He died there in June 253. Ancient liturgical books and the Roman Martyrology honor him as a martyr, though it is uncertain whether he was executed or died from the hardships of exile. His body was brought back to Rome and buried in the Crypt of Lucina in the Catacomb of Callixtus on the Via Appia, near other third-century bishops of Rome. In the later fourth century Pope Damasus I marked the tomb with a verse inscription. Medieval translations carried relics associated with him to Kornelimünster near Aachen, to Compiègne, and to other churches north of the Alps, which helped spread his cult in the Frankish world.

In the Roman Rite he is commemorated on 16 September together with Saint Cyprian of Carthage, his principal ally, who was himself martyred in 258. Eastern calendars likewise remember him. Popular devotion, especially in the Rhineland and the Low Countries, invoked Cornelius against earache, epilepsy, fever, and involuntary twitching, and as a protector of cattle and other domestic animals, a patronage encouraged by the likeness of his name to the Latin word cornu, meaning horn. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type. His cult is among the oldest in the Roman calendar, resting on contemporary witness, the martyrological tradition, and the honor paid to his tomb from the third century onward.
