Biography

Short Description

Cosmas I of Constantinople, known in Greek sources as Kosmas ho Hierosolymites (Cosmas the Jerusalemite), was Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 2 August 1075 until his resignation on 8 May 1081. He belonged to the monastic prelates who occupied the patriarchal throne in the later eleventh century. Surviving notices describe him as a native of Antioch who had taken the monastic habit in Jerusalem, which accounts for his epithet. Nothing reliable is recorded of his family, the year of his birth, or the details of his early career before his elevation. Emperor Michael VII Doukas appointed him to succeed Patriarch John VIII Xiphilinos, apparently on the strength of Cosmas’s reputation for ascetic life and learning rather than any known political following. The date of that appointment, 2 August 1075, is one of the few precise facts that can be fixed in his biography.

His patriarchate coincided with one of the most disordered decades in Byzantine history. The defeat at Manzikert in 1071 had opened Anatolia to Turkish settlement, while the capital saw a succession of coups. In 1078 the aged general Nikephoros III Botaneiates overthrew Michael VII, and Cosmas performed the coronation of the new emperor. He is also associated with the defense of canonical marriage discipline: when Botaneiates contemplated union with the former empress Eudokia Makrembolitissa, who had entered the monastic state, the patriarch and the synod refused to countenance the match. Botaneiates instead married Maria of Alania, wife of the deposed Michael VII, a union that itself raised canonical difficulties but which the church ultimately accepted under political pressure. Throughout these events the sources present Cosmas as a figure of personal piety rather than as the leader of a court faction.

The Komnenian seizure of power in the spring of 1081 ended his tenure. Alexios I Komnenos entered Constantinople in April. Cosmas crowned the new emperor and, according to the account in Anna Komnene’s Alexiad, insisted on crowning Irene Doukaina as empress as well, against the wishes of Alexios’s mother Anna Dalassene, who had hoped to postpone or prevent the coronation of a Doukas bride. That stand, together with Dalassene’s preference for the monk Eustratius Garidas, led to Cosmas’s abdication on 8 May 1081, only weeks after the coronation. Later tradition attributes to him a prediction that Garidas would not remain long on the throne; Garidas was in fact deposed in 1084. Cosmas withdrew to monastic retirement and died later in the same year. The place of his burial is not recorded in the sources that survive.

The Eastern Orthodox Church numbers Cosmas I among the sainted patriarchs of Constantinople and keeps his feast on 2 January. Hagiographical memory emphasizes his unworldliness, his resistance to uncanonical imperial marriages, and the circumstances of his forced resignation. Modern historians, working from a thin dossier of chronicles, synodal notices, and the Alexiad, can reconstruct little more than the outline of his six-year patriarchate. No writings by Cosmas himself are known to have been preserved, and the absence of a contemporary full-length life means that many aspects of his biography—his exact origins, his monastic formation, and the last months of his life—remain obscure.
