Biography

Short Description

Saint Cosmas of Aetolia, also known as Kosmas the Aetolian and commemorated as Equal-to-the-Apostles, was born in 1714 in the village of Mega Dendron in Aetolia, in the western Greek lands then under Ottoman rule. His baptismal name was Konstas. He came from a modest family of weavers and received his early schooling in the region, including at Lobotina. Seeking a fuller education, he went to Mount Athos and studied at the Athonite Academy, a leading centre of Greek letters in the eighteenth century, where he encountered teachers associated with the Orthodox learned revival of that era. He was tonsured a monk at the Monastery of Philotheou, receiving the name Cosmas, and was ordained deacon and then priest, becoming a hieromonk. The monastic and scholarly formation on Athos shaped both his later preaching and his insistence on education as a support for Orthodox life under Ottoman government.

In the late 1750s, with the blessing of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, Cosmas left the monastery to undertake a long missionary apostolate among Orthodox Christians of the Ottoman Empire. Over some two decades he travelled through mainland Greece, the islands, Epirus, Macedonia, and the districts of present-day Albania, preaching in the spoken Greek of ordinary people rather than in a purely learned ecclesiastical idiom. He sought to strengthen Orthodox practice, to discourage conversion to Islam, and to promote literacy by encouraging the foundation of schools. Later tradition ascribes to him a very large number of primary schools and a smaller number of higher Greek schools; whatever the exact tally, contemporary and near-contemporary memory agrees that school-founding was central to his work. He urged parents to educate their children, including daughters, preached against usury and the oppression of the poor, and insisted that Sunday be kept as a day of rest and worship. That last demand brought him into conflict with commercial interests that favoured Sunday markets.

His preaching drew large crowds and also opposition from some local notables, certain clergy, and Ottoman officials. In August 1779, while active in the region of Berat, he was arrested on the orders of Kurt Pasha. He was hanged on 24 August 1779 at the village of Kolkondas, by the river Seman, in territory that is now in Albania. His body was thrown into the river; local Christians recovered it and buried it at the church of the Entrance of the Theotokos in Kolkondas. In the early nineteenth century Ali Pasha of Ioannina, who is reported to have regarded Cosmas with respect, had a church and monastery raised in his honour at the tomb. Relics associated with the saint have since been kept at that shrine and in other Orthodox churches.

Cosmas was venerated as a martyr and as Equal-to-the-Apostles among the Orthodox of Greece and the western Balkans well before any formal patriarchal act. The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople glorified him as a saint in 1961. His feast is kept on 24 August. In modern Greek religious memory he stands as a principal figure of the later Ottoman period, associated with the defence of Orthodox Christianity and with the preservation of Greek language and schooling. A body of prophetic sayings later circulated under his name in popular tradition; the historical evaluation of those texts is a separate scholarly question and does not affect the well-attested outline of his life, missionary journeys, and martyrdom.
