Biography

Short Description

Cosmas of Maiuma, also known as Cosmas the Melodist, Cosmas of Jerusalem, and Cosmas Hagiopolites (of the Holy City), was an eighth-century bishop and one of the principal hymnographers of the Eastern Church. He belongs to the Palestinian monastic and liturgical world associated with the lavra of Mar Saba and with his foster-brother Saint John of Damascus. Later Byzantine tradition ranks him among the great composers of canons, the multi-ode poetic form that became central to Orthodox festal worship. Almost everything that is repeated about his childhood and career comes from the later Greek and Arabic lives of John of Damascus and from synaxaria; contemporary documentary evidence for Cosmas himself is lacking, and modern historians therefore treat the biographical outline as traditional rather than strictly verifiable.

According to that tradition, Cosmas was orphaned at a young age and was taken into the household of Sergius (Sarjun), a Christian official of Syrian origin who served under the Umayyad administration in Damascus and who was the father of John of Damascus. Cosmas was raised as John’s foster-brother. Both youths were educated in theology, philosophy, and classical Greek letters by a learned monk also named Cosmas, said to have been captured in a raid on Sicily and ransomed by Sergius to serve as tutor. Sources disagree on whether the younger Cosmas was born in Damascus or in Jerusalem; the epithet Hagiopolites may refer to birth, to later residence in the Holy City, or to his monastic affiliation. What can be said with more confidence is that he emerged from the Greco-Syrian Christian milieu of greater Syria-Palestine in the early Islamic period and that his intellectual and spiritual formation was closely bound to that of John of Damascus.

Cosmas entered the monastic life at the lavra of Saint Sabas (Mar Saba) in the Judean desert near Jerusalem, a major center of Palestinian monasticism and of liturgical poetry. There he and John devoted themselves to ascetic practice and to hymnography. In the mid-eighth century, often dated by later writers to about 743, Cosmas was appointed bishop of Maiuma, the port of Gaza (sometimes called Constantia), a see under the patriarchate of Jerusalem. He was not a patriarch. As a monk-bishop in the Eastern manner he remained celibate; no spouse or children are recorded. He continued to compose hymns after his consecration. A substantial body of festal canons has been transmitted under his name, including compositions for the Nativity, Theophany, the Meeting of the Lord, Pentecost, the Transfiguration, and the Dormition of the Theotokos, as well as other commemorations. He and John of Damascus are the chief representatives of the so-called Sabaite school. Later commentators praised the theological density, typological method, and relatively classical diction of Cosmas’s verse; attribution of individual pieces is not always certain, as is typical of this literature.

The year of his death is unknown. Later sources propose various dates in the second half of the eighth century, commonly around 760, 773, or 794. He is presumed to have died in old age, very likely in or near his diocese, but no burial place is securely recorded. He is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and in the Roman Catholic Church. His principal feast is 14 October in the Greek tradition and in the Roman Martyrology; some Slavic calendars keep him on 12 October. He was never the object of a later papal process of canonization or beatification; his cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type accorded to holy bishops and monastic hymnographers. Little is known of his episcopal administration. His lasting historical importance lies in the corpus of liturgical poetry associated with his name and in his place, alongside John of Damascus, in the development of Byzantine festal hymnography.
