Biography

Short Description

Cosmas Takeya was a Japanese Christian of the late sixteenth century who died among the Twenty-six Martyrs of Japan. Traditional martyrological accounts identify him as a native of Owari province in central Japan and as a swordsmith by trade. After his conversion to Catholicism he attached himself to the Franciscan mission in the Kinai region around Kyoto and Osaka. He is described as a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis and as one who served the friars as an interpreter and catechist, helping to instruct Japanese converts. No reliable source preserves a year of birth, the name of a spouse, or other domestic particulars, which is typical of the sparse records for most of the Japanese lay members of this group.

The context of his death was Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s policy toward Christianity. An edict of 1587 had ordered the expulsion of missionaries, but enforcement remained uneven for several years. Tensions rose sharply in 1596 after the Spanish galleon San Felipe ran aground on the Japanese coast and statements attributed to its pilot were taken to imply that Catholic missionaries were a vanguard of Iberian conquest. Hideyoshi ordered the arrest of the Franciscans working in the capital district and of Japanese Christians closely associated with them. Cosmas Takeya was taken in that roundup.

The prisoners were exhibited and mutilated in Kyoto, a portion of the left ear being cut from each, and were then compelled to march westward in winter to Nagasaki. On 5 February 1597 the entire group of twenty-six—Franciscan friars from Europe and New Spain, three Japanese members of the Society of Jesus, and Japanese lay tertiaries and helpers including Cosmas Takeya—were crucified on Nishizaka Hill at Nagasaki. They were fastened to crosses and killed by spear thrusts in the manner prescribed by the authorities. Contemporary missionary reports and the later canonical processes record Cosmas among the Japanese laymen who suffered in that execution.

Pope Urban VIII beatified the twenty-six in 1627. Pope Pius IX canonized them on 8 June 1862. In the General Roman Calendar their feast is kept on 6 February. Cosmas Takeya is therefore venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church together with his companions. Beyond his reported origin in Owari, his work as a swordsmith, his role as interpreter and catechist, his status as a Franciscan tertiary, and the circumstances of his martyrdom at Nagasaki, surviving sources give only limited personal detail.
