Biography

Short Description

Ctesiphon of Vergium, known in Spanish as Tesifonte or Ctesifonte and sometimes called Ctesiphon of Berja, is a saint of the early Christian Church commemorated as one of the Seven Apostolic Men (los Siete Varones Apostólicos) of Spain. According to a tradition preserved in Mozarabic liturgical books and later medieval martyrologies, these seven missionaries—Torquatus, Ctesiphon, Secundus, Indaletius, Caecilius, Hesychius, and Euphrasius—were ordained in Rome by the Apostles Peter and Paul and sent to the Iberian Peninsula to preach the Gospel. The same tradition assigns each man an episcopal see in southern Hispania. Ctesiphon is associated with Vergium, a place that local tradition and later scholarship identify with Berja in the present-day province of Almería in Andalusia. No contemporary first-century source names him, and no authentic writings or inscriptions from his lifetime survive. Nothing reliable is known of his family, education, or place of birth.

The legend of the Seven Apostolic Men took written form well after the apostolic age. It is attested in the Mozarabic liturgy and in compilations that circulated in the early Middle Ages, and it was later incorporated into the Roman Martyrology, which commemorates the seven together on 15 May as men ordained at Rome by the holy apostles and sent into Spain to preach the word of God. Historians treat the apostolic dating as hagiographical rather than documentary. The story served to give the churches of Baetica an apostolic pedigree comparable to that claimed by other Western sees. Some modern scholars have conjectured that the names may preserve a memory of missionaries who worked in southern Spain in the third century, whose cults were subsequently recast in an apostolic framework; others regard the seven as purely legendary. In either case, Ctesiphon cannot be placed in a verified year of birth or death, and the surviving tradition does not record a spouse or children.

As the traditional first bishop of Vergium, Ctesiphon is remembered as the founder of the Christian community in that locality. Berja has long claimed him as its evangelist and patron saint. The manner of his death is not securely recorded. Later retellings sometimes describe the Seven Apostolic Men as martyrs, yet the principal martyrological notice does not furnish a detailed passion narrative for Ctesiphon, and no authenticated tomb from antiquity can be tied to him with certainty. His cult was maintained in the Mozarabic rite and passed into the wider Latin calendar. In Berja and the surrounding region he has been invoked as a heavenly protector of the town, and his name appears in local religious art and in church dedications connected with the apostolic men of Andalusia.

Because the sources are late and legendary, a cautious account must distinguish devotion from demonstrable biography. Ctesiphon stands in the Spanish sanctoral as a symbol of the first planting of Christianity in the southeast of the peninsula rather than as a figure whose life can be reconstructed from contemporary evidence. He was not Bishop of Rome, nor did he hold a patriarchal see of the Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East traditions. He is not known to have belonged to a later religious order. His feast is kept on 15 May with his six companions, and he remains, in the piety of Berja, the saint associated with the first preaching of the Christian faith at Vergium.
