Biography

Saint Cucufas (Latin Cucuphas; Catalan Cugat; also Cucufate, Cucuphat and other variants) is a Christian martyr of the early fourth century, honoured principally in Catalonia. Almost everything that is told of his life derives from a later Latin Passio and from medieval liturgical tradition rather than from contemporary records. The Passio presents him as a native of Scillium in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis, a man of noble birth who left North Africa with Saint Felix of Girona and settled in the region of Barcelona, where he lived as a Christian and preached the faith. No independent evidence confirms the African origin or the link with Felix, both of which are recurring motifs in Iberian hagiography.

His martyrdom is placed in the persecution under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian, customarily assigned to the year 304. According to the legendary acts he was arrested at Barcelona and tried by a prefect named Dacian (or, in some recensions, Rufinus). Dacian is a stock figure in a whole group of Spanish martyr passions and is not identifiable as a historical Roman governor. The texts describe prolonged tortures—scourging, the rack, fire and other torments—followed by beheading. The place of execution is identified with Castrum Octavianum, a short distance northwest of Barcelona, later the site of the town of Sant Cugat del Vallès. A Christian named Juliana is said to have recovered the body and given it burial.

A cult of Cucufas at Barcelona is already recorded in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum, which commemorates him on 25 July, so that veneration can be traced to late antiquity. In the early Middle Ages a Benedictine abbey was established over the shrine. The Abbey of Sant Cugat del Vallès grew into one of the foremost monasteries of Catalonia, distinguished for its Romanesque cloister and its archives. Relics of the saint were widely dispersed: some remained at Sant Cugat and in Barcelona Cathedral, while a significant portion was translated to the royal Abbey of Saint-Denis near Paris, probably in the eighth or ninth century, thereby introducing his cult into Frankish territories. Further relics were claimed by churches in France and the Low Countries.

The Roman Martyrology continues to list Cucufas on 25 July as a martyr of Barcelona in the persecution of Diocletian. He is the patron saint of Sant Cugat del Vallès, which takes its name from him. Modern historians generally accept that a martyr of this name was honoured near Barcelona from a very early date, while treating the detailed biography, the African birth, and the dramatic trial as later literary constructions. No year of birth is recorded in any source, and the precise circumstances of his death cannot be recovered from the surviving evidence.
