Biography

Short Description

Cuthbert (died 26 October 760) was an Anglo-Saxon Archbishop of Canterbury in the eighth century. No reliable source records the year or place of his birth, and later medieval writers already admitted that little was known of his family or early life. He first appears securely in the historical record as Bishop of Hereford, to which see he was consecrated in 736. In 740 he was translated to Canterbury, which he held until his death. Because Hereford lay in Mercia, some modern historians have inferred a connection with the Mercian court or nobility, but that inference remains conjectural and is not documented in contemporary evidence.

As archbishop he was an active disciplinary reformer. In 747 he presided over the Council of Clofesho, whose surviving canons regulated clerical behaviour, liturgical observance, Sunday and feast-day practice, and prayers for the king. The synod also sought to align English custom more closely with Roman and continental norms. Cuthbert corresponded with the Anglo-Saxon missionary Boniface, then working in the Frankish kingdoms. Boniface wrote to Cuthbert and to King Æthelbald of Mercia urging moral reform; the Clofesho canons and Cuthbert’s known activity as metropolitan reflect an attempt to answer those criticisms. He received the pallium and exercised metropolitan authority over the southern English bishops.

Cuthbert is also remembered for changing the burial custom of the archbishops of Canterbury. Until his time they had been buried at the monastery of Saints Peter and Paul (later St Augustine’s Abbey) outside the city. He obtained the right to be buried at the cathedral community itself and built a church dedicated to St John the Baptist east of Christ Church, intended as baptistery, oratory, and archiepiscopal mausoleum. The change provoked a lasting dispute with the monks of St Augustine’s, who claimed the exclusive privilege of burying the archbishops.

He died on 26 October 760 and was buried in the church of St John the Baptist that he had founded. Later archbishops were interred there until the building was destroyed by fire in the eleventh century, after which the remains were translated into Canterbury Cathedral. He was venerated as a saint in the medieval English church, with a feast on the day of his death. No papal canonization in the later formal sense is recorded; his cult belongs to the age of local recognition of sanctity. No well-attested patronages are attached to him in surviving sources, and he should not be confused with the far more famous Cuthbert of Lindisfarne.
