Biography

Short Description

Saint Cyrenia, whose name also appears in liturgical and martyrological sources as Kyrenia, Kirena, or Cyriena, is an early Christian martyr commemorated jointly with Saint Juliana. The principal witnesses to her life and death are the synaxaria of the Eastern churches and the Roman Martyrology, which place both women at Tarsus in Cilicia, a major city of Roman Asia Minor. They are said to have suffered in the persecution associated with the emperor Maximian Galerius, whose authority in the eastern provinces is conventionally dated from 305 to 311. No contemporary civic or ecclesiastical archive survives that would allow a historian to reconstruct Cyrenia’s family, occupation, or the exact calendar year of her arrest. What can be stated with confidence is the outline given by the later passion narratives and the shape of the cult that preserved her name.

According to those narratives, Cyrenia was an elderly woman and Juliana a young maiden. Both were seized as Christians and brought before Marcian, named as governor or prefect of Cilicia. The magistrate pressed them to abandon their faith and to sacrifice to the traditional gods of Rome. They refused. The subsequent tortures are described with the conventional motifs of late antique martyr acts. In one strand of the tradition, Cyrenia was exposed to wild beasts that would not attack her, after which both women were beheaded. In another strand, they were cast into a furnace or fire, remained unharmed, and were finally put to death by the sword. All versions locate the execution at Tarsus. Because these details belong to hagiography rather than to independently datable records, they should be read as the church’s remembered portrait of two Cilician martyrs of the Great Persecution, not as a forensic report.

The feast of Saints Cyrenia and Juliana is kept on 1 November. That date appears in the Roman Martyrology and in the menologion of the Orthodox Church; communities that follow the Julian calendar observe the same liturgical commemoration on 14 November of the civil year. Neither woman is recorded as having held episcopal or papal office, nor as having belonged to a later religious order. Ancient sources do not state whether Cyrenia had been married or had children; her description as an aged woman is compatible with widowhood or with lifelong celibacy, but the texts do not decide the question. No authentic list of particular patronages—cities, trades, or illnesses—can be verified for her alone, and the place of her burial is not identified in the standard martyrologies.

The historical Cyrenia thus remains an obscure figure whose memory was preserved because the churches of East and West continued to name her, together with Juliana, among the martyrs of Tarsus. The scarcity of extra-liturgical evidence is typical of many victims of the early fourth-century persecutions. What the tradition does transmit is a consistent identification: a Christian woman of Tarsus, advanced in years, who with a younger companion confessed Christ before a Roman governor in Cilicia and was put to death for that confession. Later generations honored them as saints without a formal process of canonization of the medieval or modern type; their cult is of the pre-congregational kind common to the martyrs of antiquity.
