Biography

Short Description

Cyril of Turov, known in East Slavic sources as Kirill Turovsky and in Belarusian as Kiryla Turauski, was a bishop, monk, and preacher of twelfth-century Kievan Rus' and one of the principal authors of the Church Slavonic literature of that age. Later hagiographical tradition, preserved in a vita written well after his lifetime, places his birth in Turov, a princely town on the Pripyat River in the lands of present-day southern Belarus. The same tradition describes him as the child of wealthy parents and as the recipient of an unusually full education in Scripture and patristic writings. While still young he is said to have entered the Monastery of Saint Nicholas at Turov and thereafter to have lived as a recluse; some versions of the life present him as a stylite. Contemporary chronicles do not record his birth or early career, and historians therefore treat the conventional dates often attached to his youth as estimates rather than as documented facts.

According to the vita, his learning and ascetic reputation led the prince and the inhabitants of Turov to press for his consecration as bishop of the local see. He is generally held to have occupied that bishopric in the later twelfth century, at a time when Turov remained an ancient and still significant eparchy within the metropolitanate of Kiev, even as the principality itself was increasingly overshadowed by Kiev, Vladimir, and other centres. Independent administrative records of his episcopate are almost entirely lacking. He belonged to the monastic, or black, clergy of the Orthodox Church. There is no evidence that he married or had children, and the whole shape of his recorded life is that of a celibate monk-bishop.

Cyril's enduring fame rests on the homilies, prayers, and allegorical tales transmitted under his name. A cycle of sermons for Palm Sunday, the days of Easter week, and the Sundays that follow exhibits a highly wrought rhetorical style, rich in antithesis, apostrophe, and biblical typology, which later earned him the epithet of the Russian Chrysostom. Among the works most closely associated with him are the parable of the blind man and the lame man, an allegory of soul and body; a series of prayers disposed through the days of the week; and festal homilies that draw on Byzantine models while remaining distinctive in their Slavic diction and imagery. These texts circulated widely in East Slavic manuscript miscellanies from the thirteenth century onward. Not every composition later ascribed to Cyril can be attributed with equal security, but a core homiletic corpus is accepted by modern scholarship as twelfth-century work connected with Turov and as the high point of Kievan preaching after the Sermon on Law and Grace of Ilarion of Kiev.

The chronicles do not note the year or circumstances of his death; pious tradition holds that he died in Turov toward the close of the twelfth century. He was venerated as a saint in the Orthodox Church, and his principal feast is observed on 28 April. In subsequent centuries he became a figure of regional as well as ecclesiastical memory, claimed in the literary histories of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. Modern study of his writings, including critical editions and translations, has confirmed their importance as witnesses to the theology, rhetoric, and devotional culture of Kievan Rus', while also underlining how little can be known with certainty about the man himself beyond the texts and the late, conventional vita.
