Biography

Short Description

Cyril of White Lake, known in Russian as Kirill Belozersky, was born in 1337 in Moscow under the secular name Kozma. He belonged to a boyar family allied with the Velyaminovs, a leading Muscovite house. After his parents died he was raised in the household of his kinsman Timofei Vasilyevich Velyaminov, an okolnichy at the court of Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy. Attracted to monasticism, he entered the Simonov Monastery in Moscow, founded by St. Theodore, nephew of St. Sergius of Radonezh. Tonsured with the name Cyril, he served in humble kitchen and bakery obediences. St. Sergius, visiting his nephew at Simonov, would converse privately with the young monk, a mark of spiritual regard recorded in the later Life.

Ordained priest and later elected archimandrite of Simonov, Cyril found governance a burden and sought solitude. His fifteenth-century Life, written by Pachomius the Serb, relates that the Mother of God appeared and commanded him to go to the White Lake in the north. In 1397 he left Moscow with the monk Ferapont, later venerated as St. Therapont of Belozersk. They settled on the forested shore of Lake Siverskoye in the Belozersk land. Cyril dug a cell and built a wooden church dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. Followers assembled, and he organized a cenobitic monastery on the pattern associated with St. Sergius, insisting on common property, regular services, and ascetic discipline. Ferapont soon established his own community a short distance away.

As founder-abbot, Cyril combined personal austerity with practical dealings with princes. Andrei Dmitrievich of Mozhaisk, son of Dmitry Donskoy and lord of the Belozersk region, granted land and privileges. Cyril also wrote to Grand Prince Vasily I and to Prince Yuri of Zvenigorod, counseling peace during succession disputes. Under his leadership the house became a principal center of the northern Russian monastic revival of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, a region later called the Northern Thebaid, and a workshop of book copying.

Cyril died on 9 June 1427 at the monastery, traditionally in his ninetieth year, and was buried there. Veneration grew around his tomb at what became the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery; a stone cathedral of the Dormition later replaced his wooden church. Pachomius composed the Life in the 1460s. The Russian Orthodox Church keeps his feast on 9 June. Church-wide recognition in Muscovy is linked with the mid-sixteenth-century councils associated with Metropolitan Macarius. The monastery grew into one of the largest in Russia, a fortress, library, and occasional prison for the elite, while Cyril himself remains among the foremost saints of the Russian North.
