Biography

Short Description

Cyril the Deacon, also called Cyril of Heliopolis, was a fourth-century Christian cleric who served as a deacon in Heliopolis in Phoenicia, the city later known as Baalbek in present-day Lebanon. Almost nothing is recorded of his birth, family, education, or early career. He is known almost entirely from the brief but vivid notice in the Ecclesiastical History of Theodoret of Cyrrhus, written in the fifth century, and from later liturgical commemorations that depend on that account. Heliopolis was one of the great remaining centres of traditional pagan cult in the Roman East, dominated by the vast sanctuary of Jupiter Heliopolitanus, and it remained strongly attached to the old religion even after the conversion of Constantine.

During the reign of Constantine the Great, when imperial policy favoured the Church, Cyril is said to have taken an active part in the destruction of pagan idols and cult objects in the city. Theodoret presents this as an act of zeal for the Christian faith. The same zeal made him a particular object of hatred among the pagan population of Heliopolis, who remembered the desecration of their temples once the political climate changed. When Julian, commonly called the Apostate, became sole emperor in 361 and openly encouraged the restoration of pagan worship, local pagans in several Syrian and Phoenician cities used the opportunity to settle scores with prominent Christians.

According to Theodoret, the pagans of Heliopolis seized Cyril, killed him, cut open his abdomen, and ate his liver. The atrocity is described as both revenge for his earlier iconoclasm and a ritual humiliation of a Christian cleric. The killing belongs to the short period of Julian’s reign (361–363) and is customarily dated to about 362. Other acts of violence against Christians in Heliopolis and neighbouring cities are recorded by Theodoret and by Sozomen for the same years, though Cyril is the cleric named in connection with this particular murder. No reliable account of his burial survives; the mutilation of the body may explain the silence.

Cyril was thereafter honoured as a hieromartyr, that is, a martyr who had held clerical office. In the Eastern Orthodox calendar he is commemorated on 29 March, often together with unnamed companions who suffered in the same outburst. His recognition as a saint belongs to the ancient, pre-congregational period of Christian cult and rests on the historians and the synaxaria rather than on any later papal or patriarchal decree of canonization. Beyond Theodoret’s paragraph and the liturgical notices, no further verifiable details of his life, writings, or pastoral work have been preserved.
