Biography

Short Description

Cyril VI, born Konstantinos Serpetzoglou in 1769 in Adrianople (present-day Edirne) in Ottoman Thrace, was a hierarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate who served as Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 1813 to 1818. He received his education in his native city, which remained an important center of Greek Orthodox life. Entering the clergy of the patriarchate, he advanced through its ranks and, in the first decade of the nineteenth century, was appointed Metropolitan of Iconium (Konya) in central Anatolia. Around 1810 he was transferred to the Metropolis of Adrianople, returning as bishop to the city of his birth. Provincial metropolises of this kind were the usual path by which clerics later reached the patriarchal throne in Constantinople. As an Orthodox bishop he belonged to the celibate, monastic track of the Eastern Church rather than to a Western-style religious order.

On 4 March 1813 the Holy Synod elected him Ecumenical Patriarch, succeeding Jeremias IV. His patriarchate unfolded in a tense political climate. The Ottoman government held the patriarch responsible for the loyalty of the Orthodox millet, while among Greek-speaking Christians ideas of national revival were spreading through schools, publications, and, from 1814, the secret society known as the Filiki Eteria. Cyril VI had to balance the demands of the Porte, the interests of the Phanariot elite, and the pastoral needs of a flock scattered across the empire. Surviving accounts do not present him as a major reformer; his tenure is known mainly from synodal acts and from the circumstances of his leaving office. On 13 December 1818 he vacated the patriarchal throne and was succeeded by Gregory V, who then began his third patriarchate. Sources differ on whether Cyril resigned under pressure or was formally deposed, but he did not remain in Constantinople afterward.

He retired to Adrianople. In March 1821 the Greek War of Independence broke out, first in the Danubian Principalities and then in the Peloponnese. Sultan Mahmud II answered with reprisals against the Orthodox hierarchy, whom the Porte treated as collectively responsible for the revolt. In Constantinople, Patriarch Gregory V was hanged at the gate of the Patriarchate after the Easter liturgy in April 1821. In Adrianople the retired patriarch Cyril VI was seized and hanged, most accounts placing the execution in April 1821 at or near the metropolitan cathedral of the city. Other bishops and priests in Thrace and Asia Minor were killed in the same wave of intimidation. Precise details of Cyril’s last days, the exact calendar date of the hanging, and the fate of his remains are poorly recorded in the sources that survive.

Cyril VI’s career illustrates the dual role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the late Ottoman period: its incumbents were spiritual heads of Orthodox Christians and political hostages of the sultan. His earlier service in Iconium and Adrianople, his relatively brief patriarchate, and his death in his native city during the opening months of the Greek Revolution are the best-attested facts about him. He should not be confused with Coptic Pope Cyril VI of Alexandria, a twentieth-century figure. Documentation of Cyril VI of Constantinople remains limited compared with that of Gregory V; family background beyond his secular surname, the exact course of his education, any writings, and a secure burial place are not established in the surviving historical record.
