Biography

Short Description

The historic land of Perm, stretching along the Kama River and into the western Urals, entered the Orthodox world in a sustained way in the late fourteenth century through the missionary work of Saint Stephen of Perm, who created a written language for the Komi-Zyrian people and became the first bishop of the new see. In the following centuries the diocese, later joined for a time with Vologda and then reorganized amid the expansion of Muscovite power into the Urals and Siberia, produced a succession of bishops, monks, and locally venerated ascetics. Among names that appear in connection with this region is that of Dalmat of Perm. Unlike Stephen, or the fifteenth-century bishops Gerasim, Pitirim, and Jonah of Perm, whose lives and, in some cases, martyrdoms are recorded in chronicles and services, Dalmat of Perm has not left a vita that can be followed in print with any confidence.

The name Dalmat itself is the East Slavic form of Dalmatius, borne in earlier centuries by an abbot of Constantinople and by several martyrs, and later by monks in Russian houses. In the Perm and Ural lands, monastic foundations and parish churches maintained commemoration lists in which a monk or priest might be remembered by a single name and a day of death. It is consistent with that practice that a figure called Dalmat of Perm could have been a monk, a desert-dweller, or a member of the diocesan clergy whose memory was kept locally. No published liturgical service, stable iconographic inscription, or article in the major ecclesiastical encyclopedias, however, allows the historian to move from that possibility to a reconstructed career.

Dates of birth and death, the town or village of origin, the monastery of tonsure if any, and the place of burial are therefore unknown. There is no reliable evidence of marriage or of children, nor of membership in a particular religious order beyond the general framework of Russian Orthodoxy. Dalmat of Perm was not Bishop of Rome, nor Coptic Pope, nor patriarch or catholicos of any autocephalous see. No feast day or list of patronages can be cited from authoritative calendars, and no act of papal or synodal canonization or beatification is documented under this name in the sources ordinarily used for such facts.

What can be said is only the broader setting: the Perm lands were a zone of mission, of monastic colonization, and, from the seventeenth century, of industrial and military settlement, in which holiness was often remembered in a local key. Until diocesan archives, monastery synodika, and the files of canonization commissions are examined and published, the biography of Dalmat of Perm remains a name attached to a region rather than a life that can be narrated in detail.
