Biography

Short Description

Saint Dalmatius (also called Dalmatus or Dalmatos) was a fifth-century archimandrite of Constantinople, commemorated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and in the Roman Martyrology. Reliable sources do not preserve his year or place of birth. According to the traditional life, he served for many years as a soldier in the imperial army, including in the reign of Theodosius I, and was married, with a son named Faustus, before abandoning military service and household life to enter the monastery founded by Saint Isaac of Constantinople outside the city. That earlier portion of the biography rests on hagiographical tradition rather than on independent documentary evidence; what follows concerning his abbacy and public role is better anchored in sources connected with the Nestorian crisis.

After Isaac’s death Dalmatius became abbot of the community, which in time took his name as the Monastery of Dalmatius (near the Psamathia district of the capital). He was styled archimandrite and was credited with remaining inside the monastic enclosure for decades. In the early 430s he stood out among Constantinopolitan monks as an opponent of Nestorius, then patriarch, whose language about the unity of Christ’s person had divided the churches. Accounts associated with the Council of Ephesus (431) describe Dalmatius leaving the monastery—something he was said not to have done for forty-eight years—to lead a procession of monks to the palace and to urge Emperor Theodosius II to accept the council’s deposition of Nestorius and the doctrine associated with Cyril of Alexandria. His appearance before the court is treated in those sources as a turning point in winning imperial recognition of the council.

Dalmatius died in Constantinople in 440 and was buried at his monastery. Some narratives name his son Faustus as a monk of the same house and later abbot. Veneration is ancient: he is entered in Eastern synaxaria and in the Roman Martyrology on 3 August. No historically secure list of patronages is attached to him, and there was no medieval papal canonization in the later formal sense; his cult belongs to the early, locally rooted veneration of a monastic leader of the imperial city. Precise chronology of his youth, the name of his wife, and many anecdotal details of the vita cannot be verified from sources independent of the hagiographical tradition, but his identity as a leading Constantinopolitan abbot in the controversy over Nestorius is a matter of record.
